STLBlues
I currently hav a 2.5" guitar strap that I use on my LP Traditional and it really starts to make my shoulder sore after about fifteen minutes or so standing up. Would a 4" strap make a difference being that it is wider? I always thought they would be considering that because they're wider, the weight of the guitar on you shoulder will be more evenly distributed as apposed to a narrower strap. :D Thanks
ledzep59
A wider strap should distribute the weight better, but there's one way to find out- try it out. I have always liked leather straps with the fuzzy padding on the inside because of their durability and comfort. The white fuzz does get kinda nasty after a bit, though. NeoConMan
The width will help some. I'm a big guy, so I had some made of saddle leather. They're kinda like a stiff 2" belt, not very flexible, but easier to lift the guitar slightly to reposition while playing. Hey, if all those drug-addled scrawny little Brit boys could do it back in the sixties, I can too. :D :-) Find something wider and padded, see if it helps. Also, think about your playing height. Adjust your current strap in or out to see if that alleviates any discomfort. I found that I'm comfortable playing with the guitar a little higher than I started out years ago. Beyond that, I got nothing.
bubba_leon
Some folks wear their strap around their waists. Like Steve Albini from Shellac.

gizeh68
I buy straps for the looks, I don't really care how they feel. I'll suffer for a few hours as long as it looks good. When I practice at home, I sit down so I never use a strap anyway.

I use Moody straps (moodyleather.com) on all of mine and have no problems even after 2 hours (but they ain't cheap to buy).

Thanks[/quote'] The strap I use is thin like the one Slash uses/d. It is like 1/2 inch wide. Pressure is inverse to area. So then a wider strap will lessen the pressure on your shoulder. retrosurfer1959
planet waves and others make Gel pads that can connect to any strap (Velcro) they make it a lot more padded and comfortable. I second the above quote on quality straps the quality of the leather and even the shape can make all the difference in the world. There are some great strap makers out there Moody and Sully(personal favorite) are just a few of many

gizeh68
Hope you don't buy guitars for the looks too.... Yes I do, actually. After I do all my standard mods, almost any guitar can sound good to me. But it better be pretty as well.
NeoConMan
It's more than a passing consideration. Helps if Mrs. Neo thinks they're pretty, she will quickly give her permission if she thinks a guitar is a work of art. I've seen some butt-ugly guitars that played great, but I won't buy 'em. Riffster
My strap I use with my Gibsons is a vinatge style Levys. The pad is only 2" wide but it is padding is just right, stiff enough not to get deformed and soft enough to be comfortable. http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Levys-Classic-Leather-Strap-with-Shoulder-Pad-and-Belt-Adjustment?sku=360031 I like the look of thin straps so this one does the trick. If you move your guitars around a lot when you play the smooth leather is a better choice. If you like them to stay put, then go with the suede. My only experience with the 4inch is on my bass.
