SG Nut
Hi Guys, New to the forum but long time SG lover! Can anyone help ID the model of my 1978 SG in the pics below? It was made in the Kalamazoo plant in 1978 and has a very low production number (68!) It's all original except for the tuners, and it appears the factory finish is 'Satin Walnut' (finish is also satin under pickguard, indicating it's always been satin). Satin walnut was a finish option in '78 so that makes sense. I can't seem to figure out what model it is- its basically a Standard (all the standard features etc.), except for the fact that it has dot inlays and no neck binding. Was this an option back then? Anyway she's a sweet guitar and I have some period factory tuners to put on it too! Pot codes check out as '78, wiring looks to never have been touched. Your expert opinions would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Matt
Blackie
Here is a link to an SG site everythingsg.com I looked around on there a little and am now interested also, and as you have stated the neck is the interesting thing with your guitar. jimmiJAMM
It doesn't have the Trap inlays OR the S-G on the truss rod cover. Hmmmm
SG Nut
Thanks guys, pickups are tar backs, same as any other '78 standard. Could you custom order things back then? Weired that someone would order it without binding etc, but I suppose some people prefer plainer looking things?
jimmiJAMM
Too weird. Has the neck possibly been replaced? Sometimes the job's so seamless you can't even tell.
Blackie
I was thinking maybe just the fret board had been replaced cause the headstock has the Standard inlay.
Murph
I give up.
SG Nut
Thanks for the replys guys, It's a confusing one! Fretboard doesn't appear changed- it has the correct size frets and the dot inlays are the right size and have the right amount of 'pearl' in the patter in them if that makes sense? Might have to send Gibson some pics and see what they reckon- if there's no such model as it, then it must have been a special order...? Cheers! mildperv
What do the routes look like? It could be a routed Special.
SG Nut
Standard Gibson routes... I give up :-)
NeoConMan
Send the serial number to somebody here in the states (in a PM) and they can call Gibson Customer Service. Worth a shot, eh? Sometimes you can strike paydirt with Gibson, other times they'll have no records for your guitar....
