lillekurt
Hi, I have a Les Paul Custom serial #906146 (made in USA is not impressed underneath) - body is two piece mahogany (sandwhich) with maple top, neck is mahogany. I would like an approximate year and value for insurance. It's a wonderful guitar and I have no intention selling it, ever! Best regards
L5Larry
That serial number without the "Made In USA" and without a volute would put that guitar in 1968. That would put it in the first year of reintroduction of the single cutwaway, contoured top Les Paul Custom. There were 433 Les Paul Customs shipped that year. lillekurt
Thanks a lot for your early reply - please explain the word 'volute' to me (I'm Danish). I thank you in advance.
L5Larry
A volute is a thickened portion of the bottom of the headstock near where it turns into neck. This was an modification Gibson made around 1970 to try to strengthen the neck/headstock transition area. Here's a photo of this area on my 1975 Standard. I hope this helps. lillekurt
Thank you again - this is great support. I'm very pleased! Now if I understand you correctly - the volute is where the flat part of the head turns into the rounded part of the backside of the neck. That part definitely looks thickened on my guitar - even thicker than on your Les Paul. I like your profile photo. 'What a fabulous room - are all those your guitars?'
