TheLiveSoundGuy
Well it kind of looks like an ES350. But there are a some differences. I'm gonna say it's definitely a ES-350 model of some sort. 1955 The ES-350 Another similar model would be the 1956 ES-350 And the ES350T When all is said and done I am going with the following: (and the story that goes with it) Another category of guitars may be described as those which pay tribute to Clapton's heroes. It took Eric some years to track down the extremely rare blonde Gibson ES-350T with P-90s. He wanted it because Chuck Berry was often photographed with the same type of guitar. The story goes that Eric went on stage with the guitar during the filming of "Hail, Hail, Rock 'n' Roll", the Chuck Berry sixtieth-birthday tribute at Fox Theatre, Memphis, expecting Berry to remark on it; but apparently the veteran rock 'n' roller failed to comment. There are also some old Gibsons and others that Eric bought after seeing photographs of his blues heroes such as Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed and Snooks Eaglin. The semi-hollow Guild Nightbird electric, similar to the one used by Buddy Guy, is a tribute to his hero; a Gibson BB King Lucille signed by BB was bought at a charity auction, and a black eighties Gibson Explorer was bought at an SRV auction. To know that Eric, like us, still buys guitars for the "wrong" reasons, i.e. to emulate his heroes, is positively endearing. There are also reverse tribute guitars, as it were, such as the Taylor 12 string presented to Eric by Richie Sambora to thank Eric for turning up to play on his album, and a Pensa-Suhr Mark Knopfler model that was presented to Eric by Knopfler in the late eighties when he was a band member. Archer993
You are correct sir: Jimmy Page and his tools of the trade Led Zeppelins lead guitar player, ‘70s Rock Icon, and Gibson Les Paul endorsee Jimmy Page is being featured in February’s issue of Guitar World. In and interview during which Jimmy Page and White Stripes’ Jack White sat down with Guitar World’s editor in chief, Brad Tolinski, they “talk smack about the devil and explain why the blues is good for your soul.” Soon the talk focuses on Jimmy Page’s longstanding history with Gibson guitars. Though Jimmy at first only owned a couple of guitars, it was a visit at his friend’s that opened up his eyes “…one day, I went to Eric Clapton’s house, and every room had all these guitars in them. His whole house was like a guitar shrine. I was like ‘Crickey!’ Eric explained to me, ‘They’re all tax deductible!’ So that’s when I started buying more guitars.” Not long after Joe Walsh sold him a ’59 Les Paul which, as a guitar, has since become synonymous with his name, eventually leading to the Jimmy Page Signature line. Explaining his feelings for this guitar Jimmy says: “I can play other guitars but that’s the one I feel most comfortable with.” However, sometimes change is good. Recently Jimmy received his Gibson Custom Shop ES-350 which has given him a burst of inspiration “…I’ve found it very inspirational. Sometimes you get a new guitar that doesn’t fight you, and suddenly all sorts of things start coming out of it.” Rumor has it that Jimmy is currently collaborating with several musicians and working on a new solo album. If you want to find out more of what was talked about during the interview you’ll have to get your hands on a copy of the February 2006 issue of Guitar world (www.guitarworld.com). TheLiveSoundGuy
I sort of know where he's coming from. For unexplainable reasons, I have always felt there was something about a Gibson with a bound neck and parallelogram inlays. I don't care what model it is on. There is just something about that neck design that I am drawn to. Weird I know. That "look" has nothing to do with neck shape, contour, what material is used on the fretboard, or the feel of the neck. But for whatever reason my playing is better on models with that neck design. [/quote'] Not weird. That fret board inlay design is my favorite. Here's a half *** theory on why Jimmy likes it: To me, the inlay is reminiscent of the SS symbol - lightning bolts. They are called runes. Early on, Jimmy was into the Nazis for some reason - maybe the occult aspects of the SS. He wore a nazi pin on one of the Yardbirds covers and an SS officer's cap on stage. Like I said, it's a half *** theory but I think there is a basis. I must Google this some day. Those parallel slashes, especially when repeated, are strong symbols. Now I have to find an LP with that neck, or maybe a 350 instead. Dammit, I thought I was done buying guitars. Thanks TLSG!
