Gig fee info for solo act vox/guitar

How much is usually paid for a solo performer, coffeehouse type gig? Have written and developed a couple dozen songs now that go over well at open mic's, and am considering gigging soon. Any advice as to what to ask for so as not to look like a total newbie would be helpful. Are local music booking agents worthwhile for getting local and local-ish gigs? Or unnecessary until one starts traveling to bookings.

Thanks for advice...

$75 - $100cdn is the going rate around here (windsor,on) for solo but there are variables and other possibilities. for instance, you might negotiate a percentage of bar sales with the club manager instead of a flat fee. a club might be leary of a new or "unproven act" or the day you've booked might be a day of the week that is not a high-traffic one. a club here in town will pay $100 on wed, thurs but will up that to $150 + a bar bonus of 20% on liquor sales over a certain point and throw in free drinks on a fri/sat. there will also be duration expectations on the bar's part. most expect someone to play 3 -45min sets. if you can't carry that, then often someone will ask another act to join them. at this point it is customary to share the pay. it is important to iron out equiptment questions before the day of the gig. does the bar have a PA? do you bring one? these are all factors.

you should be able to do what an agent would do on a local/regional level. once you tour or have other aspects like merch, transportation, cd sales etc... an agent might be neccessary butl lots of bands, soloists still do it all. such is the nature of the whole DIY era that was born in the last decade. my best advice is make friends, aquaintances with others in your local scene and let them get to know you. use facebook and myspace as networking tools. you don't have to be all buddy, buddy or phony but being on a "hey, how ya doin', good to see ya" basis with bar owners and musicians is all you'll really need to excel in the local scene. have a killer show to back it up.

i pay around 150-ish for 3 sets for a solo. small bar tab... you put out a tip jar and snag another 30+, it's worth it. three 40 min. sets, that's not a bad evenin'.

i'd forgo the agent at first as he'll want points. if you've got your show together, find out who hires for the gig and offer to give him an hour sample at no charge. if he likes, tell him your fee and negotiate from there. if you're not getting anywhere that way, try the agent. i don't know how it is where you live.
