i bought my Cherry SG Std in 06 for 1200 bucks brand spanking new. Now they run over 1500!!! I only play Gibsons, but they are so overpriced it's ridiculous (but that's because there are people like me who keep buying them).

I bet a Std costs the EXACT same amount to make as a 61 RI, which prolly amounts to about 2 or 3 hundred dollars...if even.

Whatever the price quoted by Musician's Friend and all the other mail order houses is the MAP price.

Minimum Advertised Price.

That's as low as Gibson will allow them to advertise, but you can get it cheaper at a good dealer.

Didja ever notice in the ads they sometimes tell you to Call For Price?

That's because they can quote you a price below MAP over the phone if YOU call THEM.

Rickenbacker comes to mind.....

My dealer beats Guitar Center and Musicians Friend on every guitar I get from them.

You should never pay MORE than MAP unless it truly is a special guitar.

Not just because they say so.

NO!

You've been reading Musician's Friend and Guitar Center again.....

When they say they are discontinued, or sold out, or "these are the last ones..." it's because they buy in huge bulk orders.

Example;

They call Gibson up and ask for a price on 1,000 SG 61's to be delivered over 24 months.

Gibson has time to make them instead of needing to ship them all RIGHT NOW.

Over two years, well, they can do it for $XXX.xx apiece.

Your BIG BOX music store buys them for that price and sells them as they come in, so they don't have to warehouse all 1,000 guitars at once.

When they advertise they are almost sold out, it's true.

They look at how fast they sold, how much money they made on each one, and how popular they think they will be over the NEXT two years.

Then they call Gibson up and say "We want to buy 2,000 this time. How much per unit?"

Gibson quotes them a price, and if they like it they order some more.

If they don't sell well and just sit in the warehouse, they don't order anymore and they are "discontinued."

The SG 61 ain't going nowhere.

The sell like crazy even though they are much higher than a Standard, so Gibson makes $$$.

I love mine.

I shop alot before I buy, and I always pay cash.

With the choice of dealers I have, a few people I know, and a little experience, I can make decent deals.

I can't imagine how tough it would be to get a GOOD Gibson in Indonesia at any price....

Don't worry about the money.

Do a little research, spend what you think is appropriate.

If you can afford it, spend all you want.

It's your money and your guitar, nothing else matters.
