Which 1959 Reissue Would You Prefer?

I would have to go with a 1980's Pre-Reissue. Kalamazoo made those things so beautifully.
Not if you count the Heritage Standard 80. Some of those things look like they were made by blind 5 year olds. They were probably made by the same guys who made the mid '70s Deluxe.

The sad part is, they wasted some KILLER looking tops on these guitars. Hell, the pickguard doesn't even fit around the p/ups, and don't get me started on the bridge/tailpiece positions. The example above isn't that bad, but I've seen some that didn't even look like real LPs.

The tops and the pickups are why I like them so much. I do love my 1999 R9 though. Those Standard 80's are not bad either. I would love one. Look at this used one on ebay now:

I didn't say they were ALL bad, but the overal construction (specifically the cosmetic aspect) wasn't very consistant.

No, you're right. I have seen some that look like they're put together with as much love as a Jr. Bacon from Wendy's, but there are some with tops that are just breathtaking.

i have been looking for an R9 to join my family for a while now.

i have read all the stuff about the various changes over the years.

but i'm still open to anything built between about 1999 and now.

i'm not totally anal about the "historical accuracy" since i realize i'm buying a new guitar, not a 50 year old one.

but i do own a few recent Historical reissues, just not an R9, and can say they are some of the best built guitars i've ever played.

I've owned a 2001, 2004 and a 2008. I think the tops on the 2001's may be the best, overall. Also the sound of the Classic 57's as coupled to those tops is incredible (at least on mine). The build quality and vintage vibe on the 2004 was near perfect. My 2008 is a Chambered R8 and is probably the best overall in terms of build quality and smoothness of play. I played a 1997 R0 today that was stellar!

I guess there's something to be said for just about the guitars of every year!

Heres my 2001, 2008 and the 2004 I sold:

Although I haven't had the opportunity to play all the years mentioned, a 1999 R9 (Guitar Center guitar, no less) was the best I've ever played. I played quite a few newer R9's and R8's in search of my lone R8 I bought last year. Just couldn't bring myself to spend the extra $700 that used R9 cost.

Good to hear you specifically chose the year mine was made!
