Eddie_Guzz
Hello! Now im looking for a guitar to play some death metal and i was oriented to gibson explorer. But i got a chance to take Gibson SG'90. But this SG model is interesting for me, because it have 25.5 scale length, 24 frets, and ebony fretboard, strings thru body. Tuning will be C, maybe Drop B. What do you think about this guitar? It is better than SG gothic? SG special? SG faded? SG Standart? http://guitars5150.ru/Guitars1/f43.html Pluses: Price about 20% lower than EX Nice neck Little bigger scale will give better string tension Ebony will give more sharpness in attack Minuses: Bridge pickup about 0.5-1 cm more far from bridge in comparison with default SG Light weight, bad balance. But main problem is sound. I cannot compare guitars. Im sure it has better attack and more focused palm muting than explorer, but maybe this SG sound too thin for Death metal stuff that i should forget about it and get explorer? Or maybe it will be ok? What do you think? Thanks for opinion!
swede88
Eddie, I hope this help....I have an 1988 SG 90 double all stock w/ all the options Bill Larance pups, Steinburg trem. It has an ebony fretboard to die for KILLER ATTACK . As for being thin its not I have an 82 explorer that is awesome but I love the tone & growl of my SG for heavy stuff but I know we aren't talking about the exact same SG model .... but I love mine & the trem is GREAT when needed & locks when not needed. Also, I haven't had any problems w/ balance on my but use a padded Gibson heavy leather strap.
Apothecurious
I have a regular SG standard tuned to C standard that works great for death metal and such. The scale length can be an issue if you really don't like having huge gauge strings on it. I also did have to change out the bridge pickup to something hotter (a seymour duncan sh-6 distortion) but it works great. I have d'addario medium jazz strings on it (13-56) and they work great for C standard. The sg will work just fine... however I still think I would take an explorer over the sg just because they're badass looking
max2343
A 25 1/2 Inch Scale is Better for Dropped Tuning

I know we aren't talking about the exact same SG model I think the difference is only tremolo.. ? What do you think this SG is better then today modern SG menace/gothic models?
