As many of you know, I've been a big fan of both the Gibson Digital Guitar and of course, the Dark Fire. I was involved with Dark Fire in terms of doing presets for Guitar Rig, beta-testing the guitar itself, and working on the documentation; as that worked out well, I've become a sort of "outside objective person" for Gibson's high-tech guitar efforts.

Well, I was invited to Los Angeles at the beginning of October to be part of a focus group consisting of a bunch of guitar players like Zakk Wylde, Dean Parks, Steve Lukather, Alison from the Donnas, Rich Fortus and DJ Ashba from Guns 'n' Roses, etc., to check out what Gibson was going to do next. The guitar is called Dusk Tiger and while I don't have a ton of firm info on it yet, I do have some pictures (see attached) and Gibson is okay with me posting them here as a "sneak preview" to all you high-tech axe slingers.

It's still under development and I don't want to say too much, as features and specs are always subject to change. But basically, it builds on Dark Fire with many of the same features (Robot tuning, hex outs, RIP interface for use with computers, Chameleon analog tone technology, no digital modeling, bundled software, etc.) but with a simplified user interface. It has a different look compared to Dark Fire - reflective pickguard, somewhat different body shape, and an overall less "traditional" vibe than the DF. I played a prototype and it feels great. The electronics are a bit more streamlined compared to Dark Fire (e.g., less current consumption, replaceable battery) but the functionality is pretty much the same. Some of these changes may allow bringing in Dusk Tiger at a somewhat lower price than Dark Fire, but we'll see...lots can happen between design and production.

If you have questions I'll try to answer them but don't want to violate any confidentiality issues ("What?!? You told them about the anti-gravity flux transformator?!?") so please understand if I have to say "no comment" from time to time. I guess one obvious question is "So does this make Dark Fire obsolete?" to which I would say no. I have a great Dark Fire setup, the hex patches are tweaked for it, it plays like a charm, and I can't see giving that up. Dusk Tiger has some tweaks to the electronics that give different sounds, so I'll probably come up with a tweaked set of patches for it as well. What I expect based on what I've seen so far is that I'll use both guitars, but for different applications. I'm assuming that as time goes on, for some projects I'll reach for the Dark Fire, and for others, I'll reach for the Dusk Tiger...we'll see.

I'll keep you posted as much as I can, but it took a little arm-twisting to be able to post this info so I don't want to overstep my bounds . However, I really do appreciate that Gibson understands the importance of this forum enough to let me break the news here. These high-tech guitars have really changed how I play, the way I record, everything...it'll be interesting to see how Dusk Tiger progresses over the coming weeks.

Interesting how they have an inlayed top control plate ...looks from the pictures it will have threaded inserts for the screws.

This will make control modifications and upgrades not as damaging or permanent to the guitar and allow for different layouts of options.

Yet more goofy bahstid stuff.

Why on god's green earth would they put all that electronic crap on there but leave the same 1939 neck heel and NOT put a tummy cut on the back of the stupid thing? Why not put the Axcess neck heel and a nice deep tummy cut on it to make it more hospitable to play? Someday a Gibson designer is going to decide he's low on oxygen and there's going to be a big popping noise when he pulls his head out of his rear end. Maroons.

And what is it with all the over-the-top names? Dork Fire, Duck Tiger. Geez. Ninja Pigeon is up next.

One could *wish* that these guitars were even close to being techno wonders. The Dark Fire was a disaster of a guitar, the styling silly, the electronics begging to be replaced from the first get-go, the user interface amazingly complicated for simple pickup switching, the robot tuners incapable of doing a large number of useful alternate tunings without a string change. Dusk Tiger -- yet another candidate for the Wall of What Were They Smoking When They Came Up With This Guitars. Gibson, there IS technology out there. You COULD be using it. But your design team is mired somewhere between walkers and whacko, between geriatric and gonzo. It's neither right nor left brain -- more along the lines of brain stem. Keep at it, though -- you guys are gonna fight yourself right into the 21st century, just about the time that we're leaving the 22nd...

Utterly r i d i c u l o u s.

I thought we'd seen a new low a month or so ago with that Hendrix abomination, but was apparently mistaken.

Hope there's a lot of warehouse space for all of these idiotic guitar concepts that will never sell...

Please stop the madness and get back to making something somebody is actually going to want to buy and play!

And regarding the Coca-Cola reference above - remember "New Coke"?

I didn't think so.

I like the new "paint job" or lack there of but the chrome needs to go the thing that drew me to the dark fire was the fact that it just looked sexy and was dark whens the Dusk Tiger looking at being released?

For you few individuals who deem it nessecary to Complain about how a well established company makes their products, well let me just say this IF YOU DONT LIKE THE FACT THAT GIBSON DOESN'T MAKE THEM "YOUR" WAY THEN GO BUY A ******* FENDER. I didnt know the name of the forum or topic in which we are in states come B*tch about how a major company makes their guitars because I ran out of tampons last night. Apparently Gibson is doing something right because they are still in bussiness, what guitar company do you own?? how many famous musicians play your guitars? oh you dont own a guitar company and no one? o thats what I thought.

Oh and by the way if you love the les paul look go to Warmouth.com and make a custom guitar and you can bastardize the **** out of any guitar you want so you can have your tummy cut (honestly if you need a tummy cut I think you should stop complaining about guitars on the internet while drinking tons of beer and go running fat a**)
