I read somewhere that Gibson changed the name from tobacco to vintage because of the smoking issue....

Nope... Vintage Sunburst and Tobacco Burst are different finishes. I had that confirmed by Gibson Europe.

The Tobacco Burst has a tinge of red going into the black before the binding.

As for what Slash plays....... Dunno. I heard Vintage Sunburst (at least for his signature series). Some people say Vintage Tobacco Sunburst........ They all rule but he needs to put the scratchplate on.

I think the big difference is the amount of black up at the neck/selector

Just to help you....

This is a Tobacco Burst (with red tinge) and wood/flame etc above the neck pup:

This is my Vintage Sunburst (no red whatsoever) and 100% black past the neck pup:

Same guitar 'in action' (when you really can't tell the difference):

This is the USA -and- Epiphone Slash Customs 'Vintage Tobacco' (spliced into one pic - they DO seem to have a little red) but again, 100% black past the neck pup.:

So, IMHO, the Slash is somewhere in between a Vintage and Tobacco.

Deffo different finishes though.

Yes, I am a burst nerd. Sue me.

Peace.

I think it's like fenders 2 tone sunburst and 3 tone sunburst... they look close enough but are not the same thing and most people don't seem to notice[crying]

Am I right?
