Grandcase Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Hi everyone, I'm new here Sorry if the question's been asked already (very basic question I suppose) : I own a brand new Hummingbird. I think mine is a HC => what's the difference between MC ans HC ?
guitarstrummer Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Hi everyone' date=' I'm new here Sorry if the question's been asked already (very basic question I suppose) : I own a brand new Hummingbird. I think mine is a HC => what's the difference between MC ans HC ?[/quote'] Welcome to the forum, Grandcase. What year is your Hummingbird? If it's brand new, it's probably a MC (Modern Classic). Unless you have a custom model, the most common newer models are either the Modern Classic or the True Vintage (TV). The MC has a pick up and the TV does not. The TV also is built slightly different (braces). If yours is a couple of years older, there used to be the Historic Model. It might have been possible for your dealer to still have one of those (new/old stock).
Grandcase Posted April 12, 2008 Author Posted April 12, 2008 Well thanks a lot for this detailed answer Mine is at the shop right now so I can't give you a ref #, however it is brand new from 2 weeks ago and it (she) has a pickup (never used so far). So I guess from what you're saying it must be the MC model. Also mine is honey sunburst, not Cherry. Anyway, I have been dreaming of this guitar for the longest time. I don't know if it's the best playing guitar in the world, but it certainly has an instantly recognizable look of its own and for me it is the most beautiful. Here in France, this model is very rare. Actually, I think mine is the only one I saw in a store. Before that, I had been told that the Hummingbird had to be ordered specially from Gibson USA and that it might take from 6 weeks to ... 6 months. I remember, I saw one in Austin, Tx back in 1986 and it was locked in a glass window, so it could be looked at but not touched. So ... is it a legend or is it a legend ?
guitarstrummer Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 So ... is it a legend or is it a legend ? O:)/ No, it's not a legend. The legend is another Gibson model, but only comes in the J-45 or 00 versions right now (just joking, but technically serious).
Grandcase Posted April 12, 2008 Author Posted April 12, 2008 No' date=' it's not a legend. Or is it because I'm French ? (just joking me too ...)
guitarstrummer Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Are you trying to confuse me just because I'm new ? Or is it because I'm French ? (just joking me too ...) Neither. Just making a little Gibson Model joke. They also have a model called Legend. With all of the talk about the different models, I couldn't resist.
TheLiveSoundGuy Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 You are gonna love it Grandcase. And Welcome to the forum. I can't get enough of mine. There are not enough hours in a day. I hate putting it down for anything. Like eating, showering, going to work, you get the idea. All I want to do is play it. Mine's an 07 MC. I got pics of it on the forum, in the "Let's see 'em" thread. It plays like butter, and sounds like Angels.
LPDEN Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 If he had a legend he'd know it. His wallet would be ALOT lighter...
Grandcase Posted April 17, 2008 Author Posted April 17, 2008 You are gonna love it Grandcase. And Welcome to the forum. Thanks for the greetings I hope I am gonna love mine as much as you do yours. So far I have a little trouble with the fingerboard and I make more mistakes than I used to with my old Takamine. Maybe it's narrower, I don't know. Or maybe it's just because I have to get used to it + the guitar is brand new and it needs a little wear off. Also, I changed the strings, I first put a set of Martin XLight and I hated it, so I kept it 2 days and I changed again for another set (don't remember the brand) in light (12-52). The gauge is much better but I think I liked the original strings better (Gibson 12-53). So maybe I will go back to the Gibsons next time, it seems to me that I played easier with those. Anyway, the sound is great !
bs Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 After a couple years of experimentation, Gibson J-200 or Masterbuilt mediums (.013-.056) are definitely the strings of choice for my '04 Hummingbird. And I think the mediums matter more than the brand. They provide that little extra kick, and it didn't take me that long to get used to them.

guitarstrummer Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 I agree. I have used the D'Addario "Bluegrass" strings before and they are also good.
