B.F.G.??????

What does b.f.g. stand for ? I was in my local guitar shop and he had a black one on the wall just when they came out and I just remember thinking what the hell is that. The owner said that its the new bfg which stands for bad f@@@ing guitar or badly finished guitar. He went on to say that gibson rep said that a new guy had come into the company and decided that there was just to much stuff just not being used up,bodies ,necks pickups etc so they decided to do a limited run realy just to get rid of all this stuff and thats why it is what it is, its just made up of bits. Does anybody know otherwise?

Isn't that what every guitar is...just a bunch of bits?

Maybe that's what they are...a combination of sub-standard Les Paul parts the company didn't want to use on their premium guitars...or, maybe they're tried & true Les Pauls that are pulled out before the final finishing process.

Either way, I haven't read any complaints from BFG owners on any forum. The only negative things people complain about is the finish, and it's always people that don't own one. It's a guitar you either love or hate to look at...but nobody badmouths their sound.

All I have to say is try it before you make judgement.

Bad F'in guitar sounds right...that's what it is anyways...a bad f'in guitar...

Haven't we had numerous BFG threads???

I am pretty sure that it is bad*ss not bad, kind of a take on the BFG in the video game Doom. I have heard that as well as a reference to Billy F Gibbons attributed to Gibson, though I am a little sceptical on the Gibbons idea, maybe the marketing department is a little gun shy about the less than politically correct moniker. Personally, badly finished guitar does seem appropriate until you play one.

Gibson has done runs of guitars to use up stock in the past, though that has usually been associated with odd materials such as the walnut left over from the Firebrand standard models. An excess of bodies and necks is possible, the production bottleneck would likely be in the time consuming finishing process so if they wanted to expedite use of excess stock that is possible, though they could have just cut back on production for a bit. If they use up the stock but don't address an imbalance between production and finishing productivity they will continue to have that kind of problem so this would be a short term band aid repair if that was truly the case. Regardless, they have been pushing a lot more inexpensive US models recently and I think it has more to do with that. The painted three pickup SG's aren't finished much better and the bodies’ kind of feel like they were done with house paint which feels odd on the neck. Regardless, I welcome a variety of US made guitars at a lower price point, the only differences are in finishing, and the quality of the materials and construction are not in question. And, if you want a guitar to hot rod these kinds of guitars are perfect for personalizing or upgrading, you are not trashing a $2000 standard or $3000 custom.

Regardless, looks aside, BFG's are excellent guitars. I have a gold one and the tones are superior and the neck is killer and has a worn in feel to it. I have put on gold speed knobs and a truss rod cover, which help the looks a lot. I have seen a few of these hot rodded and modded on different forums and such. It is definitely a player’s guitar. While the worn mahogany Les Paul’s are finished a little better they do not have a maple cap so there are some weight and tone differences.

Don't knock it until you try one. They are limited editions in new colours for 2008 and it looks like the prices are going up as well.

Well whatever the case reasoning or materials used. I'm glad they made em. Mine will be here on monday and I cant wait, Sanded or not its a carved maple top, with a p-90 and a burtsbucker. for less than 1,000.

The alternatives i saw

Les Paul Faded DC with p-90s $869

So its got more paint, still a satin finish, still no binding, plain flat top, all mahogany...pretty much BORING

SG Classic $999

Great guitar, but....no hardshell case and well I already have an sg, so this will probably be my next purchase.

basically point I'm offering is.... Personally I've always wanted a les paul with p90s. Humbuckers just dont sing to me the way soapbars do. Been like that since i started playing. And i cant afford a $2500 GOTW classic custom, a $2000 GOTW Classic Antique, A Custom or VOS. So I'll trade the stuff that makes a les paul "pretty" for what I feel are the more important qualities that are within my budget.

Besides I like the rough look of the guitar.

To each their own.. Seems either you love it or you hate it. But like someone else said. I havent seen an owner of one of these guitars have anything bad to say about it

And thats my 2c

Most people who actually see one and play one actually really like them. Especially the finish. Like slimjimdom, I wanted an P90 in the neck and these look a hell of a lot better than those Studios with the BFG electronics that nobody can figure out the pickups in. For the money, you actually get more than you pay for with this one. I'm not liking the new finishes though. The silverburst looks cheap. :-k

The only new finish I like is bullion burst.

Black & gold are my favs.

I love my black BFG! I picked it up secondhand for £399 and its an absolute bargain. I don't feel guilty about not polishing it everytime I put it away!, unlike my LP Standard. It sounds brilliant both driven hard and played clean. Wouldn't swap it for anything (well maybe a Firebird). Cheers all.

I'd buy one for studio work' date=' or a home guitar that I'd feel okay about leaving out on the stand all the time and not worry about it getting beat to ****.[/quote']

Great if you have children running around! Unless it gives them nightmares, that is!

I think he was talking about the limited run guitar of the week # 25 of 2007 which I own one of (img)http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb227/cudamax2343/000_3123.jpg(img)000_3123.jpg and I WOULD HAVE TO SAY "BFG" STANDS FOR BAD FUC__IN FINISH000_3666.jpgBut besides the finish sounds real gooooood and with the p-90 and the burstbucker III and with both of them-on, no other gibson that I know-of sounds like It.

so is it not "big friendly giant"? well anyways, i like the way they look and i really like the black one because it reminds me of the black pearl from pirates of the caribbean, but i would never buy one unless they made one without the killswitch or atleast switch the killswitch with the pickup selector, also the zebra pickup just looks it it doesn't belong.. i really like the finish on the one in the pictures of the bfg on musiciansfriend, but ever since then i haven't seen one that looks as good.
