Andre S
Do you have to go high in wattage to get a tube amp to stay clean at higher volumes? I've been looking to pick up a small tube amp soon, ie for Christmas, but every one I like, seems to get gritty to early. Any small, relatively inexpensive amps you recommend? How's the cleans on the Vox AC4? Will it stay clean with the volume on full? What if you changed thr tubes in, say a Fender 600 champ to two preamp tubes? Would that keep it clean? I already have a decent overdriven sound from my Line
Silverbursted
Actually the higher the wattage the more room you have before it starts to breakup, which means you generally have to turn the volume up. The lower wattage doesn't give you as much room. Small wattage tube amps are great for getting gain at lower volumes, which are more house/bedroom friendly. You will get lots of people making recommendations of their personal favorites, but will take you playing through a bunch before you find the sound you like. I'll start by recommending my favorite little amp, the Laney VC15 1x10. Big sound from a small package that is very manageable at low volumes. Just sayin'...... lol I found a thread back from early 08 started by Bluemoon, about the amp choice. I want an amp that will stay clean as best as possible, at possibly low and high volumes, bedroom and playing for family like 20 people

Fender makes very good solid states with a nice clean sound. To answer your question, yes you have to get a higher wattage TUBE amp to stay clean at highter volumes. Solid state says clean all the way.

I would def go for a Fender Solid State to start off, great cleans, decent break up
Corrosion of conformity
Murph must have had a bad day. He must be looking back on some bitter memories. A great smaller tube amp that doesn't break up too early is the Fender Blues Jr., it's not too expensive and can be used for gigging and practice. djroge1
One think you can try is to swap tubes. For example if an amp comes with 12AX7 pre-amp tubes you can swap them out for 12AU7 tubes and they won't break up as soon.

max2343
Ditto go with an AU7 and your Sound will clean up on any Amp. Chicken-Pickers have been doing it for Years and it will cost next to nothing. The 12AU7 is pure Clean Sound

And, if you, on occasion, DO want a little break up at a lower volume, you can just monkey a little with the master volume knob. I've got a Blues Jr. (in the cool-looking tweed), and I think it's a nifty little amp.
