Gibson CS
Guys... Im thinking 61 reissue... Im a Les Paul guy so I dont know much about the SG. Is this a half decent model?
Space Pup
In my humble opinion, it's the best of the SG line. Try one out, you won't be dissapointed.
MGrd
[...] it's the best of the SG line ..., especially if you like a slim neck profile. This is - besides of the pickups - the main difference between the SG models.

Tim Plains
Most people will say 61 RI...I say Standard. I love my Standard. Play them both.

led floyd9
Well, the main difference between the standard and the '61 reissue is the neck. The standard (like most SG's) have necks that are very, very fat, and the only reason I like SG necks is because the only guitars I own are SG's (my first guitar was my Epiphone SG, and now I have my Gibson SG). If you like the 60's necks, then the '61 reissue is probably better for you than the standard is, because the '61 reissue may have '57 classic humbuckers, and the standard has 490r/498t humbuckers. But you can always change the pickups, but you can't change the neck (without undergoing an expensive process).
NeoConMan
VERY IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE. The neck joint at the 22nd fret. Upper fret access is MUCH better on a 61, along with all the above about the 57's and slim neck. I LOVE my 61, but the Standard is no slouch. Saves you a couple hundred bucks too. I have the 61, an SG Special, the SG 12 string, and an EDS 1275 double neck. All SG's, all VERY different. If you're in a guitar shop comparing SG's don't forget to look at the neck angle where it joins the body. The Custom with 3 pickups has an almost flat angle like a Strat, different models have different angles. My SG 12 - flat like a Strat. SG 61, slight angle. SG Classic - more like the Standard. Bridge is higher off the body. Double neck, steepest neck angle of them all. I only noticed this two years ago when I started seriously SG shopping. Check it out. AS90
My '61 was the best guitar I ever played, and the best looking. Why did I sell her? I am a very stupid man.
GibsonWarrior
I agree with the guys above, try both the Standard and the '61 as both feel very different in the neck/neck joint department. One might float your boat more than the other or like most of us SG nuts you might like both. The 61 is THE Classic looking SG, but the Modern Standard is a great sounding/playing/looking guitar too. I know the feeling...I once had an '84 Korina Flying V reissue and like a big dumb donkey, I sold it. My Grandfather once told me that you'll never know how smart you are until you understand how stupid you've been.
ALIEN8
look for a one piece body, or at least as close to a one piece as possible... for some reason they always stand out in a crowd...
flyingarmadillo
I believe the 61 RIs are all supposed to be one piece bodies
deelaz
yes the 61 ri is one piece guitar, so you can imagine how it would sound like, well in 61 RI more woods than the standard, the standard has cavity behind the pick guard, the 61 RI is the real thing for SG, no offense for the standards users
LPDEN
The '61 RI is a great example of an SG. One not mentioned in the thread yet that I like is the Eliot Easton Signature SG. That has all the features I would see as doing to a true custom.
mrktwn
I think its harder to find a really great sounding '61 and easier to find a great sounding Standard. Most definitely the neck joint makes a difference. I like the pickups better in the '61 though.

guitar_randy
I'm sure its really a fine guitar, however I own a standard.Reason I went with the standard is because the neck joint on the 61 reissue felt/seemed to flimsy/weak to me.If your standing, playing the 61 strapped on,then turn quickly to one side of the other, you can actually hear the guitar pitch change for a second due to the neck.THe standard has a neck joint which is more secure in my opinion. The pickups are different in the 2,61 with the classic 57's and the standard with the 498t and 490.They both sound very well.Pickups in either case could be changed for couple hundred bucks to get the sound of the other if really wanted. The reissue has the slimmer neck profile ,where the standard has the beefier style neck. That may also be a point of interest to you.I am used to the beefier neck joint which is alo on my Les pual studio,so the neck feeels exactly the same in that regard to me,however, upper access on the fretboard is much more comfortable on the sg vs the lp.My SG Standard is really my all time favorite guitar I own.
