Al Zimmerman
Hello everybody! I’m starting an acoustic project with a woman (two guitars and two voices). We have just had our second rehearsal, but everything seems to go on the right track. I was thinking about a suitable name for that project and wondered if you were willing to collaborate. Regarding the type of music, we will play mostly my songs (you can check them out at myspace.com/alzimmerman) plus some other covers (Cat Stevens, The Jam, Bob Dylan, The Pretty Things, The Small Faces, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie and the like…). I have an idea about a name: The Strumberries What does this name suggest to you? Do you think it fits our style? Do you have any other suggestions (they will be welcome!)? Does it remember you to that other group (The Cranberries)? Does it really matter? I hope this is the right place to post this, if not, my excuses… I know there are a lot of questions but they are just to try to focus your answers. Thank you very much in advance. Ah, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! Best regards, AL
pohatu771
In my experience, an acoustic duo needs a name that sounds less like a band and more like the album from that band. Garrison Starr, one of my favourite people ever, is currently involved in a project called "Among The Oak and Ash."
QuestionMark
I would recommend just using your names. Since its a duo, its really a collaboration of both of you, and using just your names reflects that. On the other hand...if you're married or with someone don't be surprised if your wife starts calling your duo with another woman by another name such as "trouble" or if your musical partner is married or with someone don't be surprised if there's another group member name suddenly in your duet by the name of "Jealous". Don't get me wrong...I think all of that is pure nonsense (another potential group name, eh?)...but I can tell you from experience as well as from others' experiences I've witnessed...more spouses and significant others have ruined more musical groups and musical projects by such jealousies than you can imagine. (On a positive note, some spouse/significant others are fantastic positive supporters of their spouse/other pursuing their musical creativity, development, and utililizing their God given musical gifts...and those spouses/sig others are angels who should be revered....my wife is one of those for sure.) On the other hand, as singer-songwriter John Stewart said in one of his songs, "Its alright its only music"...so if one you find your or your musical duo's partner starts freakin' remember, its only music and you can create musical projects all you want by yourself without the headaches and keep your spouse (or hers) happy by doing so. Family first, music second makes a happier life and more energy to make better music! Alright...I can't resist tossing out these top 10 tongue in cheek possible names for the project. Only you'll know which resounds best. 10) Mid-life Crisis Music Project 09) I Want to Get a Husband Project 08) I Want to Get a Wife Project 07) I Want XXXX Project 06) Sonny and Cher Already Tried This Project 05) Thinking About It More, I Really Only Want to Hire a Background Singer Project 04) Yes You Do Sing Off-key and Strum Too Loud, but I Really Do Want to Do This Project 03) The We're Musicians, Not Strumberries Project 02) The I'm Going to Handle Trouble and Jealousy Project ...and the number one suggested name for the project is. 01) The Just Remember Its Only Music Project Good luck and hope it all works for ya! larryp58
Hey Al! Good luck on your venture! Not to sound harsh, but the "Strumberries" sounds a little gay to me. I would try something else. Just MHO!!!
Al Zimmerman
Wow... I thought it was going to be a little better... Thank everybody their input, but I already tried a group with just the names and it seems too egocentric. That's why I wanted a project with a unique name for the whole of it. Regarding the issue with the jealousy... I already took that into account, but, for the moment, this is not the issue, so I won't consider any of the proposed names (thanks, anyway!). larryp58: Why do you think it's a gay name? I'm not a native English speaker so maybe that's why it sounds different to me? Any other alternatives? Thanks all of you! AL

QuestionMark
Al- Please keep in mind that the names I gave were in jest...in the US we have the David Letterman Show where he gives funny top ten lists of things. With english not being your native language, I just wanted to make sure you understood the names were mentioned in a fun way. This site is a friendly place and your request (or any musical thang) is welcomed here. QM aka Jazzman Jeff

Al Zimmerman
Well, I didn't said it before, but here it is... I'm leaning towards a name with just 2 words, being the first one "The". That's why I wrote "The Strumberries", it sound right to me. A mix of "strumming" (a guitar related activity) and "berries" (something pointing to the country, green fields, folk music and so on). The other names don't really sound good to me. Call me classic or whatever, but... Anyway, I really appreciate your help. Regards, AL

Gilliangirl
Well, I really like the Strumberries. I thought it was really unique and descriptive (the strum part) and harkened back to the 60's when every group name started with The. I don't think it sounds gay at all. I didn't think at all of the Cranberries. It sounded very unique to me. Al, your English is GREAT! Don't apologize for knowing TWO languages! Lot's of groups using Strawberries though, however when you make it big they won't even register. Again I like The Strumberries, conjures up hippies frolicking in the grass and playing some tunes on old Gibson guitar.

bkharmony
Not trying to be harsh, just give you an honest reaction: "Strumberries" really bothers me for some reason. Maybe because the first thing that pops into my head is Stromboli? The word just has a bad sound to me. If I think of anything helpful and positive during the day, I will report back. Al Zimmerman
Again, thanks everybody for the inputs! Gibson101: I'm 36, so maybe that's the fun part of it, not having experienced the 60´s, but wishing it... DanvillRob: Thanks for your suggestion, but I don't get the "dish" thing. Does it have a double meaning? Cunkhead, thanks for your support! bkharmony, I'll be waiting for your report! I just had to google for Stromboli, since it didn't mean anything to me...
