sok66
A very popular Les Paul in its day, as it was the only one with the full size humbuckers. They were hampered buy their small "fretless wonder" frets, which made string bending very difficult. Most were well finished and looked great. Neck size was actually quite the same as the Les Paul Classic, i.e., reminiscent of the '60 - '61 neck profile. Has your typical Custom appointments, fancy inlays, ebony fingerboard, etc. Underneath, the Norlin era multi-piece top & back, and 3-piece mahogany necks. I stocked & sold many of them back then, and probably had half of them re-fretted by a local luthier as part of the sales deal. He got really tired of doing them. I tried unsuccessfully to order them from Gibson with full size frets, too. From memory I'd say I sold probably 60% of them in cherry sunburst, which in those days was as close as you could get to a '59. I had one myself in cherry, and at the same time also had a real '60 sunburst. My bandmates actually liked the tone of the '71 better than the '60. Norlin, go figure! I recently found a well beaten black '72, which is great fun to have around. I'm sure you'll enjoy your '71!
