X-Mas AJ

Christmas came early for me this year...got myself a 2007 Birdseye Maple AJ. I've been eyeing this in my local GC, and with a snow day yesterday, I brought my '75 D-18 over to see what they would offer on trade. They offered a fair price and we made the deal. No pics yet, but here's a post from AGF with a guitar from the same run: http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169542 (kudos to that photog!).

I've never been a fan of maple--love the weight, but the clarity highlights my slop. Also, never been a huge fan of the AJ--always preferred the smoothness of the SWD for my rosewood needs. But this combo of maple and the AJ--wow!! Like a round shouldered J-200 for strumming power, but also really nice AJ thunk. I'm loving it.

it's a christmas miracle! a fair trade price from GC! i usually leave feeling insulted and swearing i'll never go back. i hope you enjoy your new guitar. pics when you can!

Thanks!

I walked in wanting $1000 for the D-18' date=' they offered me $800....I then asked them to take a $100 off the AJ--which they were selling for $1600, and they agreed---which I thought was a great price for near mint custom shop limited run! I sold my Custom Shop J-45 a couple of weeks ago, so guilt free. [biggrin

Nid, I'll be curious to hear what your impressions are of this maple AJ after you've played it for a while. I've had my eye on a flamed maple AJ short scale. Hope you post some follow up comments on the guitar soon.

FP,

really enjoying it. It is strong in every respect...like my SWD and a good J-45, it is a very good all-around guitar. I've found it suited for everything so far. That is unlike my last maple experience--a J-185 I had for a few months, which was not my kind of strummer. I have a pretty heavy hand and need a guitar than can handle it without breaking up--this maple guitar can. In that respect it is more like a super jumbo than a J-185.

The maple makes it so nice and light too..not as light as my '46 J-45, but much lighter than the SWD and my Gospel.

I would not hesitate on that potential short scale purchase...I bet it is a cannon.
