Help Identifying My Newly Acquired Gibson

Hello all,

I was recently lucky enough to have a 1997 Gibson CL-30 guitar given to me by a family friend. I've always wanted a Gibson, and this is one beautiful guitar. I've done some basic research about the CL-30, but I'm a bit confused. Unlike some of the others, this guitar says CL 30 Special on the inside, instead of just CL30 or CL30 deluxe. I guess I'm wondering if special just meant deluxe or is this guitar something completely different. I plan on writing Gibson to verify in the next couple of days, but I was hoping someone here might have some information.

Thanks for looking!

If it says "Special" on the label, after "CL=30", my guess is that it received that designation to distinguish it somehow. Without seeing it, I would think that perhaps the plant decided to make a small run of CL-30s with some feature of construction -- wood? adornments? tuners? inlays? etc? -- that was a bit different from the "typical" CL-30 spec. Perhaps a Guitar Center 'special', e,g?

If you write or call Gibson (1-800-426-2636), ask for Lavonne Jurack there; she may be able to put you on the fast track to getting some useful information on the guitar. Being as it's some 12 years old, though, they may have to sort through a few cobwebs to figure it out.
