ricrellim
I have a black 88 custom lite with gold hardware. The gold is getting corroded and turning green. Does anyone know what I can do about it?
DoubleSixx
Have tried any metal polish ? I'm not making promises but maybe this will help : Gibson-Vintage-Reissue-Guitar-Restoration-Kit I love this stuff, great for neck, body and metal. Good luck, let's know if you have a solution. I too have gold hardware and would like to avoid color change.
Aaresz
Be careful with metal cleaners on gold hardware. Some will take the gold right off down to the nickel base. I would also recommended the Gibson polish, but try in a less obvious area first.
3dmac
Yes be very careful, the gold will come off. Corrosion is from sweat ! Damp cloth wipe down after playin !
ricrellim
I will try the gibson polish. Thanks for the ideas. I am sure its from sweat and being in Florida its whole life.
phil47uk
I had an old 72 Custom I gigged for years, seven nights a week back in the 70's. All the gold tarnished. Started to flake and went green.. Keep it that way man.. It's part of the guitars and your's history. At least it genuine and the real thing...Not done in a workshop by a guy with a Dremel tool. LPDEN
I have one older instrument with gold hardware that has held up pretty decent, while I have seen dozens or more that tarnished and peeled. I'm not a metalologist (is that even a word? ), but I always wipe my gear down after use with a spritz of polish and a clean cotton or purpose-made cloth, including the metal hardware. 2 things that are generally bad for most finishes: Sweat and Humidity. Plank_Spanker
I have two with gold hardware. There are spots on the pickups that are worn down to the nickel, and there is some pitting. It's a sign of a well played guitar and "character". I play my guitars hard, but I take very good care of them. I wipe them down when I'm done playing. Gold just doesn't hold up or age nicely like nickel does.
