Report A Fake Here!

Lowdown

Recommended Posts

Here's an idea...instead of having multiple threads about fakes, why not make this a sticky so everyone can put up their finds so we can all help report it and take it down.

Call me crazy, maybe it's been mentioned before(I dunno),but does not anyone else think this just might be a good idea? Huh...

C'mon then, powers that be...wave your magic glue stick.

Isn't that what the existing stickied thread is for?

No.

That thread - http://forums.gibson.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=17661 - is an enquiry.

I'd prefer to have a "Report" thread.

There is a dime a dozen threads asking if this or that guitar is a fake...which is why I want to make it clear, for those who know what a fake looks like and get asked for help, that a thread exists to take down the myriad fugazi's.

Thanx heaps for bothering to reply anyway mate.

As I said,I thought it was a good idea...

Although this particular poster has (up 'til now), seldom trawled through LP's for sale on places like eBay, I think it's a great idea. And you never know, it could create a new-found interest: viz - play spot the wrong un...? [blush]

It's a nice idea, but I understand why Gibson may not acquiesce this request.

1. In just about every counterfeit thread, for some reason some members take it upon themselves to post a link to where these counterfeit instruments are sold..... That's a big NO-NO here, and if we start seeing more of this, we may suspend membership accounts.

2. These type of threads more times than not turn into a firestorm, especially if the uninformed deems a fake to be real. Then it turns into a 4 page slam fest[blink]

This is my personal feeling:

Why would we want to give counterfeit Gibson guitars it's own special sticky or forum[confused] ..... This forum is for Gibson made product. Any threads regarding counterfeit guitars should be locked and the thread starter should be directed to Gibson Customer Service.

At the moment there are no real set guidelines about how counterfeit threads should be handled, so for the most part members must be careful in how they respond to the thread starter.

In closing, Gibson states that all Gibson instruments should be purchased from a authorized dealer. Certainly not everyone buys new, but even used and vintage instruments can be purchased at authorized dealers. If one chooses to make a purchase from eBay, then it's buyer beware.

And whats even worse, is when the uninformed call a real Gibson a counterfeit and the "FAKE" crusaders take it upon them selves to bombard the seller with nastygrams and even get a legitimate auction pulled.

If you don't know. DON"T respond.

Personally, I couldnt care less if someone buys a fake. I/we are not here to justify anyones purchase. You buy private or from e-bay you

are taking a huge risk....stop cluttering up the forum with "should I? "...or "Is it?"...questions.

Call Gibson if you have concerns, that what they get paid for.

This guy is fake. He's not the real Axe. His head only tilts 15 degrees. It should tilt 20 degrees. The real Axe has blue skin. This more of a purple skin. Lastly, the registered mark is a little too bold.

Lynch him!!!

OK.

Have your 500+ threads by posters asking"is this a fake?" And then everyone b*tches about"oh here we again, another thread asking for advice".

In all due respect Duane - I myself have on numerous occasions reported to the Gods fake guitars, yet if the seller is not a multiple seller/offloader,the The Big G prefers to let eBay or whoever it may be deal with the problem.

I,like just about everyone else would like to do something about it and do...for now...:-

Most of us know a fake when we see one. The one's that don't,ask in the sticky already mentioned.

I wanted to make it easier for us to get behind pulling down a fake seller that The Big G walks away from.

From experience,eBay et al,will also not listen to a lone voice. This where majority rules,NOT mob rules as is being inferred.

But...why the hell should I bother then if Gibson's own forum throws up a virtual brick wall.

I was only planting the seed mate.[biggrin]

Scam away my little Oriental foes. :-

If someone is dumb enough to believe that are getting a real Gibson Les Paul Custom for $300 then they deserve what they get...

What if they are a kid.

I predict around 50% of people that buy fakes are kids that search around the internet for a guitar.

They see a gibson les paul for $300 and they ask mom and dad to buy it.

Can we blame them?

No.

Indeed' date=' as has been debated here in the past.[/quote']

Well ,if it has been debated in the past then quite obviously you missed the point then and the only lesson learnt was how to roll over and play dead.

Insulting some(and I am not solely shooting at you TG)unknowing recipient who unfortunately gets conned because someone who knew better and could've made a difference, but didn't because their train of thought is..."if they bought a $300 LP,then that's their fault"...well,there ain't too much separating us from the (insert nationality here) crooks.

TG - I've called on your thoughts before,I hope you didn't lump me in with the $300 LP club.

I never heard of a 09 Faded, neither did you. If it was a fake,it would've been nice to report it and have some back-up.

So yeah...that[thumbup]

CLOSE THE THREAD.

I don't share your opinion, I don't care for "how to spot a fake" threads anymore because people don't even read them.

I think you missunderstood the man there, I'm sure his coment was about those guys that buy a 300 gibson not out of ignorance, but because they think they are brigther and luckier, you know, the type of person that would come here and post "you are all a bunch of idiots that's been ripped off, 'cause I got the same guitar as you for 1/8 of the price you paid"

There are lots like that, man, that think they discovered the secret forumla for the 25K Ferrari and $5 prada purse and actually consider us all idiots for paying "store price".

Now, people who come here asking questions, you know I'm always willing to help and colaborate, both in public threads and via PM.

What if I did? [lol] Just kidin' man... actually you are one of the members that has come with a question that was not already answered in the 100s of fake threads[thumbup]

I want to ad something and I think older members who hate fakes and counterfeiters (like Neo, Guitarest and others) will back me up:

When we say "whoever thinks he can get a gibson for 300 deserves it" we don't mean it as an insult.

It is:

a) more like gettin' a C- because you didn't study before your test at school... you deserve it, don't you? nothing insulting about it (this one deserves sympaty and our help and we usually provide)

or

:-k like not studying at all, then taking the test really confident that you'll score an A by copying from the guy next to you: the guy that didn't study and will get a C- (this is the kind deserves to get that C)

My "have been debated here before" comes after the innumerable "how to spot a fake" threads, Guitarest even made one of them a sticky, so anyone looking for a gibson who was making his homework before buyin' could see it and check the guitar he's been offered. People who already had bought a guitar could just go in and check; him (guitarest) and some of us invested a lot of time on that thread, and I say invested 'cause even tho there was no money involved, for some of us it pays to know we've helped fellow guitarists in need.

So there was a sticky... AND PEOPLE STILL CAME HERE AND MADE NEW THREADS ABOUT THE SAME OLD STORY "Is this a fake?", "how to spot a fake", which is a violation of the rules (Rule #8. Before you start a topic, perform a search to see if the question or topic you wish to create has been made before. If it has, post in the topic that already exists. Duplicate topics will be moved or closed. )

Not a rant, more like a little forum history for you to understand where some of us come from [love], yours was a good idea, but I think by now you'll see why there were so many mixed responses.

Mom and dad have come here in the past looking for info on such guitars' date=' don't know if you were here already.

There's lots of people who have come here asking for directions and have ended buying great guitars, there are a couple that got ripped off and didn't notice until they came upon this forum, and the important thing here is they didn't pay 300, they paid full (used) price. Both of them got their money back if I remember correctly, and then went and got the real thing.

Maybe Gibson should give certified online stores "the gibson forum certificate of autenticity" [love
