Tim Plains
Anybody have one...or even heard of one? A guy I work with has one. Says they were made in '79 & '80 only. His is a '79 with only 150 made. All original except for the tail piece. Sorry, I don't have a picture, to post. He's an old schooler and doesn't even have a digital camera. I did see a picture of it, though. It has a natural wood finish. Just wondering where I can get some info on it. Buddy says he hasn't been able to find any himself. I tried asking at a music store and they never even heard of a V2...but yes, they existed. Are they valuable?
yoda
I would not doubt it, that is about the time they made the E2 explorer.
L5Larry
I remember the V2 when it came out. The oddest thing I remember about the guitar was that the pickups were "V" shaped. I don't know how they wound that coil. This guitar was very much an oddity, and therefore will never have any real collector value. The low production numbers doesn't add to the value because they are "rare". It means nobody bought them so they quit making them.

Tim Plains
Actually, he did have a picture of it. I think they look pretty cool...never heard it, though. I like it. I'd take this over a few other Vs out there...but let's not turn this into a 'which guitar looks better' argument. Maybe they did stop making them because people didn't buy them...but if somebody does want one, they'll have a hell of a time finding one.

Oringo
Are those low-impedence pick-ups, like the Les Paul Recorder or L5-s?

It sounded ok through a Marshall stack.
Grog
With all of the posts on E-2's, I'm surprised I had to go so far back to find a post on the V-2. I bought one a number of years ago that was modified. Someone had routed it out for a Humbucker in the bridge position & added an extra hole for something. I rewired it like a Les Paul with 2 tones & 2 vols, to use the extra hole. My origonal intent was to plug the gap, from the humbucker & make a piece out of pickguard material to cover it up. It seemed les noticable at the time to just leave it. The price was right and it is a rare guitar, not much known as to how many were made. 157 were shipped in 1979, no other records are available. dem00n
Wow thats sweet, how do the pups sound?
Grog
The pickups sound a bit thinner than standard humbuckers. I can't put my finger on why, but it has one of the best playing necks I've ever played.
Hydra26
Like mini's? I have a LP Deluxe and I just love how that thing sounds.
Grog
Mini Humbucker is probably pretty close, I'll have to try them side by side someday. The V-2 was one of the few Gibsons that had a Pickup designed specifically for it, and a split humbucker to boot!
Mickeymix
Hey folks....it's an old thread but it's the only one I could find on the V2....here's some more info on them...I am a proud original owner of one myself. http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/FlyingVII.php

veeman
I've had 3 of them over the years. Well built solid guitars they are, but all 3 sounded terrible. Very tinny sounding. Low output pickups that are basicly single coils. Output jack in the worst possible place too, right in the middle inside of the lower horn. V's are great sitting guitars, but the V2's with the jack where it is basicly made them a standig guitar only.
RUSHian
I played one of these back in the early 80's, I chose an ES347 instead. It did sound thin, and reminded me of a guitar the band Heart would play. Did sound thin, but looked cool!
ScottGrove
Wow, you guys need to do your homework. I've had several over the years. I paid $3,000.00 for my current one. The pickups are single coils on this version. They are the "boomerang" pickups. Bill Lawrence made them. They are the same pickups that were used in the S-1's. They were simply chopped in half, arranged in the cool "V" shape and were wired in a hum cancelling mode because of the 2 coils. They sound like a Telecaster. They were more expensive than the Les Paul Custom of the time. They were offered in a few candy apple sparkle colors too with standard dirty finger humbuckers. They were the most high end guitars of the Gibson line at the time. You really need to realize a true classic when you see it. The value on these increase nearly 20% per year now. Pretty sweet. Yes, very collectible. Here is my video review of them. If you want to check out many of the wild and crazy rare Gibson guitars that you probably didn't know even existed...check out the rest of my guitar reviews on You Tube. Grog
These are rare guitars............ The shipping total book lists 157 for 1979 & there is no record after that. I read once that there may be as few as 200 shipped. As I posted earlier, out of many guitars, it has one of the most playable necks of all of them. A friends Byrdland beats it out only by a little in my opinion. That being said, the pickups are a bit weak when compared to a Les Paul.
