Les Paul Custom/SG 61 REISSUE

GASYNDROME

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just joined the Gibson owners club after a long absence.

Just purchased a double cutaway Les Paul custom -think it is an historic series reissue. Don't know much about this particular model -hoping somebody can tell me a bit about it. It is a six digit serial number 030611 which tells me it was made in 03. The finish on it has me perplexed -it has an slighly yellowed white finish but the hardware apears to be nickel with an aged finish -no sign of it ever having been the tarnished gold that I have seen advertised -presume it is pre VOS.

Opened it up and it has the PAF pickups and a piece of masking tape with MIKE written in red in the neck pickup well.

Can anybody confirm the type of aging treatment to the hardware and what type of cleaner should I use -looks almost rusty on the pickup covers. Also any shipping info would be appreciated.

Any help would be apreciated.

Regards

PS

Just had a closer look and tested hardware with a little guitar metal polish on the Maestro tailpiece - grime came straight off and polished up well so it does not look like it has an aged finish. Did they make these without the gold hardware?

Wow' date=' sounds like you got your hands on a cool piece!

And yes, pics are worth a million words.

Sounds like the questions I quoted would be best directed at Gibson Customer Service directly.

Not sure if the serial number protocol works as you stated, so there are some other possibilities for the year.

And how, exactly, are the pickups marked as PAF's?

You would probably get more traffic on this one in the SG area of the forum.

I know it was originally a "Les Paul" in name but the SG guys get to claim this as one of theirs.

Stick around, somebody will come along to help you a little more I'm sure.

If I get time, I'll call Gibson myself with the serial and see what I can learn from them.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. The pickups have the words "patent applied for" inscribed on their underside.

Have contacted Gibson Customer Service a couple of days ago but have not received a reply. I must admit the whole thing has got me intrigued but all of the hardware, pots etc have Gibson inscribed. Tuners are period looking marked Gibson Deluxe - am hoping it is not a Chinese fake as it did not come with a Certificate of Authenticity but did come in a "Custom Art" Gibson "Historic case" and handbook marked same.- bought from a second hand dealer.

I got the serial number info from the Gibson website link.

Will try to upload pictures in the next couple of days and put this thread on the SG forum.

Regards
