tom brown
been looking at the 1959 les paul reissues and now i notice that the 1958 reissues are almost the same guitar(?) except maybe the neck is thicker, and the frets thinner which is hard to notice in pictures...but 1958 can be had for about 2500 yet the 1959 for a nice one is more like 4500 on ebay. are the electronics exactly the same? how much fatter is the neck? Tone is my primary intrest so the top is not so important. Is the price difference because the demand is so high on the 1959's? thanks tom

tom brown
R8 vs. R9 This question gets asked a lot !! They are the same guitar. All reissues are essentially the same guitar with minor differences. These differences are neck thicknesses, pickups, weight of each individual guitar, finishes & tops. The best way to get an understanding of the neck sizes is to actually play them. Me explaining that R8s have thicker necks than R9s and R7s have thicker necks than R8s doesn't mean jack unless you sit down with the guitar and see for yourself (quote from above link..) anyone know how the pickups are different? Tim Plains
^ R2, R4, R4BB, R6 - P-90s. (R4BB has a different pickup in the neck but still single coil) R7, R7BB, R8, R9, R0 - humbuckers. Spec wise, every regular R7, R7BB, R8, R9, R0, since 2003 has Burstbuckers 1 & 2 but sometimes you'll come across one with '57 Classics. That might be because Gibson ran out of BBs that day or the guys in the shop just decided to put in some '57s - who knows?

deepblue
R8 vs. R9 = same guitar. They are identical twins with one being slightly prettier than the other. Its up to the buyer to decide which one is best looking.

Customs also have ebony fingerboards.
