martinsecrest
I appreciate any help in determining the date of my guitar. Serial number is 72189039. I believe it was made in the late 70's or early 80's, but I really don't know.
martinsecrest
OK, a little research done now -- it looks as though perhaps this guitar was made Feb. 18, 1979 in Kalamazoo? It does have a barely-hanging-on sticker inside that indicates Kalamazoo. This date would square up with roughly the correct time frame that was indicated when I bought it about 1985. ksdaddy
You're close. It's a '79 made in Kalamazoo, the 39th one stamped that day. However it was stamped on the 218th day (August 6th).
martinsecrest
Thanks for the reply. Any idea on the market price for this guitar these days? Mine's for sale, but has a serious flaw in the finish on the back (very alligatored from an accident 20 years ago) but is a great player, and the front, sides, and neck are fine as you can see. ksdaddy
I had a May '78 one identical to yours. Sold it in 2004 or 2005 on ebay for about $1400 or $1450. I suspect stuff has gone up since then. You might check ebay's completed items but bear in mind there will be a freakishly huge spread in prices based on the year.
martinsecrest
Thanks again, KS. I think the finish issue is likely a $500 deduction on my 175 (sniff).
martinsecrest
A vintage site has posted a price guide for the 175D as below. Are they dreaming? Vintage Price Value For 2008 : 1952 - 1956 > $5500 to $7000 ( p-90 ) 1957 - 1959 > $11000 to $13000 ( Humbuckers ) 1960 - 1963 > $5000 to $7500 1964 - 1966 > $3900 to $5700 1967 - 1969 > $3300 to $4000 ( various colors ) 1970 - 1979 > $3000 to $3500 1980 - 1999 > $2000 to $2500
ksdaddy
I never go by those guides. Something is worth whatever someone else is will to pay for it that day. That's why I use ebay to get a sense of what the market is bringing. I looked for 70s 175s and there was one that had an opening bid of $2799... it got no bids. There's one up for grabs with Kieffer Sutherland provenance with a buy-it-now of $2350.
