SG fan 420
Voted for Entwistle, though Terry "Geezer" Butler is my favorite, with an honorable mention going to Jack Bruce from Cream.

rocketman
I'm a huge Rush fan but Billy Sheehan is a local product. I'm trying to take emotion out of this though. Each one has a unique style. I actually played Jaco's runs on piano so I'm a big fan of him too. I don't think I can state that one of them is the best. My brain is working too hard... DAS44
I'm not saying best, I have no knowledge of bass to be honest. But my favorite is Rick Danko.

NeoConMan
JPJ, Mac, and Tommy Shannon of Double Trouble fame. Noticed him more with Arc Angels and Storyville.
FirstMeasure
I was gonna say Wilbur Bascomb from Jeff Becks old groups but Neo reminded me of Tommy Shannon. Tommy is one solid bass player.
Basshole
Jaco is interesting character, how he works on stage and his body language. I guess that explains his bipolar disorder.
Rocky4
Being a Zeppelin fan, I voted for John Paul Jones. His bass lines are perfect to Pages playing. I think Led Zeppelin 2 is his best work. The Albert Hall DVD is amazing. On another note, Jeff Beck's Spanish Boots came up on my iPod today. I've always thought Ron Wood was a better bass player than a guitarist. SHO
Jaco wins this easily for me. His stuff with Weather Report would be enough, and adding his playing with Joni Mitchell to that just makes it all the more clear. I think Bootsy Collins deserves to be mentioned as well.
