Bad finishes on 339's.....

I am looking into buying a 339 some time soon but I have seen a few ads (on flea-bay granted) for new 339's that have what is being refered to as "Weather Checking" on the front and back of the guitar.

This weather checking looks to me more like long cracks in the finish running along the grain of the wood and in a new guitar this I wouldn't think is desirable as it will lead to other more serious problems over time.

Is this a common problem with the 339's?

That doesn't sound right to me. I bought my 339 as a customer return and the finish is perfect. The instructions did mention that you would not want to open the case if the guitar was ice cold as the nitro finish could crack. Maybe some people did not properly acclimate their guitar before opening them in a warmer environment. I've never heard of this actually happening to anybody though...
