Not that there's anything with a cable made in another country, I just try to buy American when I can. -I use a Monster Cable speaker cable for hooking up my head to my cabinet. I use both the stadium series which are very good, but coil up a little easily, and the tour series ones, also with silent plug. I use the angled version of the silent plug when playing a Les Paul or telecaster. So far I have been very happy with these cables. A lot of companies claim their cables sound better, but if they do confer any additional sound quality advantage this would only be apparent if all your other cables, like patch cables etc, were of at least the same quality. In other words there's no point in having a really high quality expensive cable if it then goes through several nasty patch cables on the way to the amp. I did buy a couple of VOX coiled cables recently. They look great BUT they are rubbish. The angles jack plug will not even stay in a telecaster, it's too short and just drops out. I got rid of them. guitargreg1993 Posted January 23, 2010 Share Posted January 23, 2010 For patch cables, I use the Fulltone patch cables ($17 a piece for either 6 inch or 9 inch) and for the longer cables that go from guitar to 1st pedal and last pedal to amp, i have 2 CBI standard 10 foot cables. they were really cheap and i got them as a special for $5 each at my local guitar shop. however, when i get myself a real amp, im also gonna buy myself some real cables, meaning Monster Rock Cables. It's the best cable i've owned. I got it in Nashville a while back at the Gibson Showcase. But most guitars come with those crappy black cables that don't even last a month. milod Posted January 23, 2010 Share Posted January 23, 2010 Full disclosure: I was sent an Elixir cable to review since I'm an Elixir string user. I got a "really good" cable two years ago and, other than better plugs than some of my really old stuff I still have been using, I couldn't see any difference except it was bigger and was not the "springie" sort of thing. For years I used leftover "spring" cables from the rock and country band days. For just sittin' and pickin' stuff, they worked fine except the plugs seemed to be getting a bit odd... or old. <grin> Again. (Yeah, I've put new ones on a couple of times per still-surviving cable.) The new Elixir cable is pretty much different from anything I'd used before. For one thing, it's much, much heavier. They claim it won't twist up like most of them will, and so far, the 20-footer I have does seem that way. It's a much thicker and heavier piece. The plugs look as if you'd destroy the guitar faster than the plugs, which ain't how it used to was. I don't know the price tag, but I've never used or even seen a more "quality" sort of cable, even with touring bands and really high-end stuff. The one I have needs to be wrung out more before I'm really confident saying, "no it won't give you twistie coils," or anything else other than that it obviously carries the signal well and is very well made. I'm going to change strings on a cupla guitars this weekend and we'll see what, if any, sound difference I might ascertain. Frankly the "cable thing" is way different from the old days. Almost everybody I knew used the tight "spring" type cables that I haven't seen in a guitar store for years. They were great for not getting in your way on stage, but they did put some pressure on the guitar jacks as well as the cable ends. They weren't in the same class as this new Elixir cable as far as general sturdiness, though. The old ones each have had at least two sets of new ends soldered on, so I'm beginning to wonder what's left inside... m Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Silverbursted Posted January 23, 2010 Share Posted January 23, 2010 I really like the zzyzx Snapjack, nice solid feel, consistent tone, and never have that spine tingling snap crackle and pop you get if you should happen to have the plug disconnected from the guitar or amp without being in standby (amp) or volume down (guitar).
