I didn't watch Avatar...

OK, I finally saw it in 3D IMAX. I don't generally go to see the blockbusters and I don't go to the theater that often as I prefer to watch them on DVD so I can stop, discuss, back-up and watch the extras (I call the DVD extras BVDs because they are shorts). I didn't go out of my way to see it, and I had no burning desire to get there, but I was close by with time to kill and it was convenient.

First of all the story line was trite and very predictable.

But it has been said that there are really only 5 different plots and endless variations on those plots.

Plus most of the characters were exaggerated. But that is not uncommon in movies.

Third, the soundtrack was way too loud so I had to wear my musician's ear plugs. I would estimate the volume to be around 110db which for 3 hours would inflict permanent damage on unprotected ears (advice: if you go see it, bring ear attenuators).

Fourth, the music was formulaic and overdone, but I think that just about every movie James Horner does is formulaic and overdone. They should have hired someone like Danny Elfman or Lalo Schifrin to do the score, I think either one of these people would have been better for this particular job.

But despite all that, I enjoyed the movie very much.

The special effects are the show. I don't think I've seen better CGI work. The 3D effects were great and for the most part not overdone.

If you want to go to see it, don't go expecting to see great cinema, but go to see great cinematography.

I've read some sci-fi that I really enjoyed. But this doesn't ring my bell. Looks like great animation and effects' date=' etc. As you say, not my cuppa.[/quote']

What's this "reading" you talk about man? I hope it's not some crazy sh-t that would get you banned [lol]

Thanks for bringing that up... most won't believe it but I actually enjoy reading books way more than watching the movie versions.

It quite honestly never interested me much. I thought about trying to go see it to see what the fuss was about, but heard it has a leftwing subverive, anti capitalist, socialist, why you should hate America theme to it, so I never went out of my way to see it.

If my wife said she wanted to see it, I'd have gone with her. She didn't and I have more important things to do. [cool]
