raveyd
ive recently got hold of a second hand sg, i know its either a 61 re-issue, (dont know which year) or a fake. any hints on how to tell? it has a white rectangular stamp on the back of the head with a 5 fig number and made in the u.s.a it is a double closed pickup model , the pots are the same as a 61, havnt checked the pickups yet though. so any other ideas, i could do with the help as i cant seem to get an answer of anyone else, and the insurance man needs to know, if it is original that is

Laaz
No current or recent SG's have a 5 digit serial. Lets see some photos.

cwness
Call Gibson Customer Service and give them the info and you'll have to send them some photo's but you will find out for sure if it's real or not. CW
Tech21
Photo's required... Use your phone if nessesary, crappy photos are better than none. Gibson serial No's on most solid guitars are either : - inked on the headstock... Stamped into the headstock (most will be like this)... or a Decal on the headstock under the clear coat (but never used on SG's as far as I know)... If it's a '61RI it should have you cost around £700 to £1200 depending on age and condition.... if it didn't then it probably isn't. No current or recent SG's have a 5 digit serial. Lets see some photos. This is probably the biggest clue as to what you may have.... Post Some Photos............. And tell us what the Serial Number is............ Yew
If its an actual 61, you are so lucky xD
Tech21
Just re-read what you wrote.... it has a white rectangular stamp on the back of the head with a 5 fig number and made in the u.s.a No SG (or other Gibson for that matter) that I have ever seen has a "White Rectangular" anything on the headstock with the serial number on it. You say a "white rectangular stamp", do you mean it's a label? If so, is it just stuck on to the headstock or is it under the clear coat?... or is it a portion of the headstock that is a different colour with the number on it? Are they written on by hand? Ink stamped? Stamped into the wood??? Come on guy...give us a bit of help here if you want it identifying...... T21

Edge SG
this looks fake i could not find a serial number on this web site guitar dater project, (here is a link) http://www.guitardaterproject.org/gibson.aspx. )
KL
That's got to be a fake for so many reasons . . . including wrong shaped headstock, sticker with "serial number "on the headstock, wrong pick up selector switch, probably the wrong knobs too I think, and I'm sure those who know more about SG's than I do will tell you more reasons. raveyd
hey there, thanks for your comments, although, half of you dont know wat ur on about, the headstock of any early (61) les paul sg (and there were such things) used a les paul neck and headstock on an sg body, only ever made 200-250. les paul picked one up at the factory to try, decide he didnt like the sound so told gibson to take his name off em. now i know its not a '61'. im not that lucky, they did re-issue ltd copies in 88 02 and 05. thats wat iv been saying people, its not a 61!! as for the pots, the early pots (61) are the same as mine, they changed to 5 piont settings on the tone pots in 74 and went to the les paul style switches and the 3way selector is the same as a 61. iv been digging deep, trawling the net trying to geta def yes on a date. ah well keep trying!!! lol!!! if ive offended anybody hey im sorry that is not my aim, i just wanna know how old my little girl is
Harrybob
Thats a fake if I've ever seen one, I'm no expert but thats a shame people try to sell fake stuff to others like that.
Kurt
Hi! It sure is a fake. Was said quite often and is true. Sorry. Greetings Kurt
raveyd
im no expert, n the people i know who are, say that it is genuine n it is are-issue but cant determine the year, ive got to take it to another specialist, who only does valuations. the only thing i havnt checked or let anybody do, is take the pickups out and check the numbers. hey wen you only pay a tiny tiny bit out, n get the tonal qualities of this piece of kit, fake or not i dont care!!! when played side by side with an sg aquired in 74( you will notice i said aquired) there is no difference when played through marshall 100w amp combos!!!! so if it is a fake its a dddammmmmnnnnnnnn good 1[biggrin]
