Abbey Road For Sale

Recommended Posts

...the studios have faced cheaper competition from recording facilities in other countries' date=' and technological advances allowing artists to record using only a laptop computer have made it harder for labels to justify owning expensive recording infrastructure.

"What you have is a very, very expensive piece of heritage. If an artist goes to a label and asks to record at Abbey Road they will be met with maniacal laughter," the media lawyer said.[/quote']

And people wonder why a lot of today's recordings sound like crap. Aside from mixing for MP3 and the insane compression applied during mastering, there's a reason why certain pieces of old recording gear demand very high prices. Just like vintage guitars, there is no substitute for gear like Urei 1176 compressors and Pultec board EQ modules - that stuff each has it's own sound and, so far, no digital algorithm has been able to capture it. And, let's not forget talent - sure, anybody can learn the mechanics of how to record on a laptop at home, but do they have the experience and expertise to make what they're doing actually sound good?

Maybe the economics don't work out to the bean counters, but there is no substitute for a quality space with quality gear and talented personnel to capture a great performance.

The Beatle-era door is now in a Hard Rock Café... I'm not sure which one.
