blacklabelsam
Finally I joined the club as well. It was about time A couple of days ago a friend sold me his 1980 LP Custom. It's actually my present to myself for finishing my Masters at university (and it's my first Gibson). It's not exactly virginal anymore and has a few bumps and bruises, but I don't mind. Nothing too bad for a 30 year old guitar (I just love the finish). I named her 'Elaine'. I know that's it's kinda stupid to name a guitar, but I did it anyway. 100 point for the person who finds out the reason for ths name (and no, it's not my mothers name )Here are just a few pics. Tell me what you think. Cheers PS: Thanks again for the good advice and information I got on this forum!

remember
elaine from seinfeld do you have the pick guard? were the pickup covers replated?
blacklabelsam
I removed the pickguard (I'm not a big fan of those, but I still have it). The gold plating of the pickup covers is coming off. You can see it at the edges. But I'll remove the covers as well, since I'm getting really bad feedback on the gain chanel of my amp and a luthier told me that this is due to the fact that there is too much space between the covers and the pickups themselves and the result is some sort of Faraday cage that produces feedback. Plus, I think it'll look better with just the 'naked' pickups. And the name 'Elaine' comes from the game 'Monkey Island' (yeah, that really, really old game)

blacklabelsam
Of course, when you have a high gain setting and high volume then feedback is nothing unusual. However, if uncontrolable feedback already occurs with mid-gain settings, then you have a problem. A good way to check whether your pickups are ok: set the amp to the gain channel and tap on the pickups with your picks. If you hear a sort of a really hollow tapping noise, then you might consider to either change pickups or remove the cover (but the noise has to be quite loud and hollow, because you'll hear something even with perfectly good pickups). Another way is to get a luthier to press the cover closer to the pickup. Although, that problem tends to occur with older pickups, because with modern production methods that problem usually does not occur. The luthier who takes care of my guitars doesn't have any time at the moment. So I'll have to wait for a month or so, but I'll try to keep you posted. Cheers[/quote'] my pickups are the PAF'S i wanted to put away my lpc since it's value has increased so much.i bought an epiphone les paul to get the "thick sound". the pickups have great controlled feedback and i can increase my gain to full tilt.
