elvendio Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I am wondering your opinions on hanging up a guitar bu it's neck. I'm pretty sure this wont harm the guitar over the long run but what do you all think?
Raptor Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 As long as you don't have kids or dogs that can knock the off the hanger (or they are up high enough to be out of the way) I don't think there are any major problems with it. Cover the hanger prongs with leather or pure cotton socks to help prevent damage to the finish, and make sure you check and change the socks now and then so they don't wear through and let the prongs do any damage. You will have to keep dusting the guitar, and don't hang it directly over a heater, source of moisture, or in direct sunlight. The heat and sunlight can dry out the fretboard and rest of the wood possibly causing problems, also sunlight will fade the finish over time. Moisture can cause a whole mess of problems too. I think 30-40% relative humidity is the recommended range, but another rule of thumb is, if the room is comfortable for you, it should be ok for the guitar.
slash#101 Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 iv always used wall hangers and im ok its ok if u dont have it nere a radatior or anything hot cause it bends the neck
Cat Daddy Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Hi, elvendio! Well, I am a little concerned that the neck on my new Robot might stretch and go from a 24 3/4" scale length to 25 1/2" ! <g> Seriously, I use Hercules GSP38WB wall mounts to hang my guitars and have never had a problem. The Hercules has a unique Auto Grab yoke...the weight of the guitar in the hanger causes the arms of the yoke to swing upward and inward, locking the guitar in the hanger. The arms of the yoke are covered with specially formulated foam rubber that supposedly will not harm the finish of the guitar. Since the Robot was a limited edition and I don't always believe what I read, I also use a clean cotton cloth in between the arms of the yoke and the Robot's headstock. As Raptor noted, clean cotton socks work fine also. <g> Cat Daddy

AS90 Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Im thinking of getting some hangers for my Fenders but my Gibsons are staying in their cases!
gibsonjunkie Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Just posted this phtot in the comments area, but it looks like this is more appropriate. This is my Gibson Wall. I also am working on a Fender wall, but it isn't as complete a collection... Notice the humidity/temp gauge right in the middle - I try and maintain 65 degrees and 45% humidity year-round. So far so good and one if them has been hanging up for over ten years....

Gibson CS Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Music shops hang their guitars all year round. Ive been hanging mine for about 10 years as well. So far, so good!
gibsonjunkie Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Just curiosity..... which one's been hanging for over ten years? The plain acoustic on the left is a 1972 J-40 (bought new). I've actually had it hanging in several locations over the years.

guitar_randy Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 guitars should be fine.I wouldn't suggest hanging people by their neck tho.
atj13 Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Im thinking of getting some hangers for my Fenders but my Gibsons are staying in their cases! Yeah the Hercules hangers are perfect for the Tele's as they swivel to fit the asymmetrical head stock shape on the Tele. That means your guitar doesn't rest on the low E tuner peg. I have seen a few Tele's hanging in stores that way
badbluesplayer Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 As long as you don't have kids or dogs that can knock the off the hanger (or they are up high enough to be out of the way) I don't think there are any major problems with it. Not sure about having leather in contact with a nitro finish. But I'm a scaredy cat about that kind of stuff! I do love the Hercules stand. Very stable.
surfpup Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I've been using the String Swing hangers for years now. No problems with the necks or with the nitro.
DieselGenny Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 If you have Hercules hangars with "Autogrip" system, and kids are a potential problem, "Guitar Hangar Safety Locks" are available HA201, as used in many music stores (in UK at least) - but this order code is for a pack of 10 (with keys). I got a pack when my youngest was climbing on our sofa and lifting the SG up from the bottom - stopped it falling off. So I put them on whenever the kids have friends round to prevent nosey-parkers dinging my toys.
pippy Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 To answer the OP's question; Hanging the guit by the neck will not cause any issues - assuming a certain level of common sense - but as the OP hasn't been here since Feb 2009 I'm not altogether sure he will read my views on the matter..... P.
DESERTSTORMED Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I am wondering your opinions on hanging up a guitar bu it's neck. I'm pretty sure this wont harm the guitar over the long run but what do you all think? Depends on a few things, humidity in the room,if it's over a heater,or heater vent, and basically if there are any chances of it being knocked into accidently, etc. also if it's a Heavy Bodied guitar with a Thin neck. When I have my guitars out,I ALWAYS use the newer type A-Frame stands-OnStage makes a heavy Duty One,...They don't put ANY Pressure on the Neck like a standard type that has the U Shaped rest on top that holds the nexk,Usually If I'm Not playing them for more than a day or so,They gop Right Back in the Case. If it's a matter of wanting to "Show Off" your babies, there are some Nice After Market ClearTop Cases with Plexi-Glass tops that will do the job and keep your guitar SAFE.
pippy Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 You do realise that you are replying to a question posted in January 2008? P.
