tsol Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Hi i own a Gibson Flying V and an ES-175; i love the V's neck because for me it is one of the "fastest" i ever played, (the one on the ES-175 is another story), i was just wondering if the SG's neck plays any similar to the V's ? tsol
FennRx Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 what about the V's neck is fast? Is it a thin neck? Or is it the finish on the neck? Most SGs have fatter necks.
LPDEN Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 what about the V's neck is fast? Is it a thin neck? Or is it the finish on the neck? Most SGs have fatter necks. Good question. I notice there seems to be different factors that define a fast neck to different people. I usually relate it to medium frets (no jumbos), a low profile neck shape with a smooth finish, somewhat flatter fretboard and a width at the nut no wider than 1.75".
Beatnik57 Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 No doubt one of the guys who owns both a V and SG will weigh in, but in the meantime I see where the V has a neck that's sort of a cross between the '50s rounded profile of some SG models, and the '60s "slim taper" of others. My guess is you'd find at least one SG model that played as well as your V and that it might just be a matter of how the tone and feel of that model(s) compared.
Space Pup Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I own a V and a '61 Reissue and the neck on the '61 is slightly thinner. Both guitar play great but the trade comes in where the V has more power with hotter pickups and the '61 Reissue has more tone with the '57 classics. Think of it like this, the V has a better Hard Rock and Metal tone and the SG a better Blues and Rock tone.
