Ian Martin
Geez friends, I know most of you are middle aged, but do all of you have an unlimited supply of cash? Seems all you bastards are always picking up something new! You're making a poor kid feel bad! ;-)

ChanMan
Don't feel bad.... that list of equipment down there represents YEARS of acquisitions, some of which were litterally "pinch me I must be dreaming" purchases. (Yamaha FG-75+$50= 12 string, f'rinstance) My Les Paul represents the fulfillment of a life long desire to own one. I honestly started shopping for it in the late summer of 2006, and just bought it in March of this year. Hopefully, the next one won't take as long

I also have a decent job and an understanding wife who is hooked on pushchairs (That can be expensive too!) I just go out see the bank manager and find whatever means to pay for them..... Just do it.... Gibson LP Custom slash signature Gibson LP Goddess Ibanez S 470 Ibanez S 270 Washburn KC20 Tanglewood TW15 Marshall MG100 Head Marshall 412 Cab Good guitars are like having kids. cgarlie
It's an advantage of being an "old fart" -- of course, more time to play them would be nice too:-) Here's one view I like -- you can put money into a retirement fund or into good guitars -- probably both will pay off about the same in the long run. cvansickle
Speaking for myself, it's really my one and only hobby. I make a good living, I suppose. I don't play golf, or go to professional sports events. My family doesn't eat out very often. There is a lot of recreational money in my direction, so I indulge myself. Of course, like many others on this forum, my collection represents years of gear coming and going.
retrosurfer1959
for the Kiddies out there STAY IN SCHOOL helps the salary Personally I'm a DINK (Double Income No Kids) my wife and I both have exec type jobs in tech industry so lot's of disposable income. Last few years the Hobby paid for itself and then some with older guitars appreciating sometime into the crazy ranges I started playing and collecting mid 70's so the late 50's early 60's guitars weren't collectables they were just the older guitars we could afford. Kinda cool how it worked out, but like others I sold some when I thought the prices had topped out boy was I wrong, but who knew. I guess if I had a crystal ball I would have filled My Dodge chargers and Plymouth Roadrunners full of Gibsons and sports collectables and collectable garbage like Pez Dispensers instead of chasing girls and booze. circle of life
Silverbursted
Gibson just gives them to me . That would be the way to go, but for the rest of us schleps its years of pushing the outside of the envelope until we arrived at the right time in our life to enjoy a real work of art. PS Not bagging on AXE, only wish I had his talent as a musician.
Zaphod B
I'm middle-aged, I've got a good job, my wife has a good job. My two teenage daughters try to spend all our money but somehow we are able to keep enough to make the mortgage payment and buy food. I buy US savings bonds through payroll deduct and use them as my cookie jar money. Usually once a year or so I'll have enough to cash in to buy something nice. This time I'm saving up for a Custom Shop 1954 reissue so it's going to take a bit longer.

I have one LP Studio and an SG Classic, which I bought for my son with the understanding that I could play it whenever I want. I sometimes I feel so inadequate here when I see some of the other collections. But it does give you something to look forward to.

Rarely go out doing the 4 wheel drive thing. Usually take my motorcycle. Married to a very understanding woman, the smartest thing I ever did. 1. Never smoked. Add THAT up if you do just a pack a day. 2. Seldom drink. Has many attendant costs. 3. Pay cash for everything I can, what debt I have is NOT on any credit cards. 4. Buy used vehicles in good shape with high miles. Many of my guitars were bought used. VERY clean, but used - cheaper. Work lotsa overtime, and only buy when I can afford it. I've passed on dozens of killer guitar deals because I refuse to borrow money to buy a toy. No cash, no sale. Do NOT get divorced! Nothing wipes out a guitar, gun & hot rod collection faster.... Out_Of_Control
NeoConMan: I dig the matching T40 and T60! I always thought they were a nice pair. I agree with everything else NeoConMan said. Making wise choices with your spending will take you a long way. I also consider my hobby to be Guitars. I don't spend money on other hobbies, sports, toys, or drinks. I drive older cars that are paid for, and I don't need high fashion clothes. My wife works and together we make a nice middle-class income. We have one child and a dog. We live within our means. I've been buying and selling guitars for the last few years. I operate on the buy low, sell high, principle. I've handled over 80 transactions which have netted enough profit to pay for the guitars that I keep for myself. My personal collection of guitars have value and were paid for with profits made from my hobby.

LPDEN
As I understand it, Gibson dealer here in the US aren't allowed to sell outside the US. I guess that protects the International dealers, which is full understandable. But with the weak US dollar going up against a stronger EURO (I don't know the current valuation ratio) used gear from reputable dealers that ship internationally could be the the bargain of the day for you. Or taking a vacation in the US and weighing your costs (Valued added Tax /VAT) bringing it back home with you. Or if you have a family here... daveinspain
For me I had been saving for a few years and built up a nice reserve... Then the Dollar fell to its lowest level ever, I live in Spain and we use Euros. All of the sudden a $2000 guitar costs me about 1200 euros. When the Euro first came out the Dollar was worth more. Then it fell to being worth about the same and stayed that way for a long time. So I'm sure this wont last long... Imagine someone saying to you I'll take 40% off on any guitar you want... or You want this one...? Ok I'll knock $800 off the top for you. I can't resist and now is the time for me to buy. I also remember when the dollar was more expensive than the Euro and everything cost me a bundle.... These things go in cycles...
Encinitastubes
Even buying a car with 20,000 miles on it versus a new car can finance a pretty nice guitar collection. Gotta find ways to do it and make choices.
