The Black Prince Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Hi folks I've had an SG since around 1982 which I bought as a 70s model, its battered, chipped and cracked but I love it! It still sounds great and I'd never part with it but I need some help in working out when it was made. I've trawled various sites on the net but can find no reference to the serial number I have on the back. All the sites I've looked at say the serial number should be 8 numbers but my guitar only has 5. It's Cherry Red, with pearl squares inlayed on the fretboard. Serial number is 77072 stamped in black on the head, it has Made in the USA underneath. Can anyone help me please? Thanks
kevoT Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 you can check this site! if it's before '77 then you should type in the stuff in the box below as well as the normal stuff. http://www.guitardaterproject.org/gibson.aspx
kevoT Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 how is the serial number put on the headstock? ink stamped or pressed into the headstock?
The Black Prince Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 Thanks I tried that site before and it comes back unrecognised. I think the number is an ink stamp, it doesn't appear to be pushed into the wood.

Your guitar was made somewhere in the area of 1970-1972, but the serial number doesn't reveal a lot at first. I'm guessing they will have to dig in the archives a little for any other info they may have. He says to email pics to service@gibson.com Total attachment size must be under 2 mb, so send them in separate emails if you must. Good luck with it!
The Black Prince Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 Thanks a million!!! That was really kind of you[biggrin] I'll get some pics done and email them to him. Thats older than I thought, as I said above it's a bit worse for wear in the looks dept but sounds lovely!!
The Black Prince Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 My old guitar isn't as shiny as some of the others on here so be prepared[blush]
Blackie Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 ahhhh come on .........it aint how it shines.......it's how it plays.
kevoT Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 the serial number was used twice, once in the 1960's (1962, 1963,1964 the site said) and once in 1957, haha definitely not 1957
