cherrylester Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Hey SG slingers! I need some help with finding straplocks that work best for this guitar. I have an early 70's SG and at 1st had dunlop dual design locks on it. The button at the neck heel stuck out so far it was in the way when playing high up the neck. I have original dunlops on my les paul and schallers on my strat, but they both look like they may stick out too far as well. I see dunlop has a traditional and a flush mount version, has anyone used these, or have any other suggestions? I would guess the flush mount might be the one to try. For now my old dimarzio leather cliplock is on there and is much better. I may want my 100 dollar (am I insane?)moody leather strap on it though! Thanks
jameslucascalvert Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 I used Schallers, but had to pick up new screws--didn't want to drill out the SG, and I definitely didn't want to bury the screw too deep! Maybe on a LP, but not on an SG's thin body....
NeoConMan Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Schallers - on everything I own, for two decades. www.rattlesnakeroadhouse.com/Schaller.html And if you decide to go that route; Here's EVERYTHING you might ever need to know about Schaller strap locks, and some things you don't.... http://forums.gibson.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=22187
deelaz Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 I use dunlop strap lock and I had to drill a little bit deeper in sorrow! But they work nicely and long last pretty well! Avoiding your sg from dropping!
GibSinCity Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I used Schallers' date=' but had to pick up new screws--didn't want to drill out the SG, and I definitely didn't want to bury the screw too deep! Maybe on a LP, but not on an SG's thin body....[/quote'] I drill the schaller so that the original screw head fits. (drops-in) This allows you to use the original Gibson screws and match their own threads. This is usually just an issue with the rear screw, which is sometimes larger. Using the original screw is key, as it fits the original threads the best with the least resistance compared to other screws. In my experience, the front original screw fits into the Schaller, but the back screw is just a bit to big to sit in the lock enough to let it work. So buy just drilling the Schaller a bit, and enough, you can get that original bigger screw to sit in the lock. This has worked for me anyway, maybe others' situations are different.
jameslucascalvert Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I did that with my Les Paul, since they were gold screws. But with my SG, I didn't feel like drilling anything, so I just picked up some new shorter thread screws. Pure laziness.
flyingarmadillo Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I use Schallers and turned down the OE screws to fit. BTW, there is another issue since you're using Moody straps. They're so thick that it is difficult to keep the nuts tightened on the locks. Make sure you check them at least once a week or the nut can fall off (followed by the guitar!)
Swinzey Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I have Dimarzios and used the original screws they have a nice combat kinda plastic buckle on top and on the bottom for when you case your axe. I love them. I had schallers on my Am Strat and they were ok but I def like the marzio setup better. :( They're the best!
Twiz Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I think the general consensus on here is that Schaller's are the best. I actually agree. However, I've always used Dunlop Straploks. They've always worked fine for me. I'm just too lazy to change all my stuff over.
SGplayer1994 Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Schaller's seem to work great for both of my SG's, just put a little lock tight on the strap fastener (what you clamp onto the strap itself)
