screwdriver Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 hey i am using a SG Special Faded with d' addario super light top/regular bottom strings and was wondering if tuning to open e would damage the guitar neck. because i have heard other people say that it could warp or break the guitar neck is there any truth to that. thanks for the help
cwness Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 I do it to play Just Got Paid by ZZTOP and haven't had any problems. CW
Southpa Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 I certainly wouldn't want to own a guitar that I couldn't tune to open E! I don't care what it says on that headstock, to me it would say "Junque". There should be some leeway in the construction of the guitar to compensate. I've seen scarf joints break and some fractured headstocks but most of the time these were caused by a sharp unnatural rap to the noggin rather than a little excess string tension. You might experience a little more neck relief tho.
rockman82 Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 Open E hasn't broke my guitar neck yet.. I use it to play songs like Let's Build a Home by The White Stripes and stuff. I also use Open G and A. DADGAD too. Mainly for Kashmir.
