Sefrez Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 I'm sure a few of you know my story about GC. If you don't, it doesn't really matter. Point is, you should know how the sellers work. The original seller was trying to get me to buy a warranty that last 11 years with Gibson. It covers neck bows and fret wear, and possibly some other things. I have a few days left (a "period") to decided if I want to add it, and it costs $150. I guess my question is, would it be worth it? I told the seller, that if the neck bows, I would just tighten the truss rod and usually that will fix it up, but fret wear, I know it will be created, and I can see the guitar needing a fret setup in the future. How much would something like this cost if I didn't have any warranty? Like just sending it in for a new fret setup. Thanks, Sam
Flight959 Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 Gibson warranty is warranted to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for the "life of the original retail purchaser", aslong as your the original (1st) owner and the seller is an authorised Gibson dealer... http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Support/WarrantyRegistration/GibsonUSAWarranty/ $150 worth it..... No way... IMO Regards
ksdaddy Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 I wouldn't bother. If the truss rod needs a tweak to correct normal changes in relief due to string gauge changes or environment, that's something you can do yourself or at the very worst a tech will do it for nothing (or nearly so). I have a feeling if anything weird happened to the neck like a hump or twist they would claim it to be covered under Gibson's warranty and hand it back to you. As to fret wear.... cripes, I've done many, many refrets, full and partial, and I can't ever recall doing one on a guitar less than ten years old. I'd take my chances as-is. I never buy the 'extended warranty' or any of that crap. I'm sure there's enough fine print so they can weasel out of it, and they're also taking the bet that you will sell it or trade it sometime in that time period, thus cancelling the extended warranty. Trust me, they've done their homework and they're not going to offer something if it's not in their favor.

I once bought a computer printer for under £20 and they tried to sell me a three year extended warranty for £35. It was a joke. At £20 the replacement ink cartridges cost more than the printer, and if it broke it would be cheaper to throw it away and buy another printer!
Tim Plains Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 A fret dress will probably run you between $100 - $150, depending on the guy who does it. I've never heard of an extended warranty on a Gibson guitar. That's not through Gibson, right, just through the seller? Sounds more like just some guy saying he'll do free maintenance for you if you give him the $150 now. Does he also cover other things - like the finish coming off or the neck twisting? Probably not.
BigKahune Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 ... I'd take my chances as-is. I never buy the 'extended warranty' or any of that crap. ... Yep. Skip the 'extended warranty'.
Sefrez Posted April 25, 2010 Author Posted April 25, 2010 Cool. Thanks guys. This is actually what I wanted to hear. -Sam
