After 3 returns and kind of an overall bad experience w/Gibsons purchased online, just got an LP Traditional (in ebony) from Musicians Friend and have to say that I am blown away by the thing. I posted previously after buying (and returning) a Studio, a Joan Jett Melody Maker, and a Gary Moore BFG. Well, finally listened to forum advice and went higher-end with a Traditional.

So, OK, now I get it. Have owned an ebony Studio in the past and currently have a faded mahogany Studio, but the Traditional is a significant upgrade over anything that I have played before. Better quality sound, amazing sustain, and I am really digging the binding on the fret-board and the body.

The guitar kind of shows the good and the bad from Gibson - it was "used" from MF, which means a customer return, so I got a good deal on it. It has several flaws (chip in the binding, finish flaw near the strap button, indentation in the fret-board by the highest fret), so the production really was not great. That being said, the darned thing sustains and plays like nothing that I have ever owned before, and is well worth what I spent.

May post pics at some point, although the ebony doesn't have the "wow" factor that other colors have in pictures. However, at this point I would not trade it for anything, and it has restored my faith in the brand.

Yessuh that is a pretty little beast, isn't she? I'd like to try out a traditional, they're not chambered, are they? I actually like heavy heavy guitars. I've heard some people complain about shoulder pain from old Lps, but I just play rock, y know? 30-40 minutes and i'm off the stage...no 3 hour moon-jams or 47 minute extended solos. I hear you on not liking the melody maker, but what was wrong with the Gary Moore? I've never played one, but they seem like they'd be pretty nice?

Congrats. That is a Beaut. And who cares if it's a lil scratched up? Guitars are to be played not pampered. They're like women- if you don't show em a lil abuse they'll never learn to respect you.

The Gary Moore is a very, very, very expensive Studio.

And I care if a guitar is a little scratched up... [blink]

But if the price is right and the damage minimal, I say go for it!

Congrats on finally getting the right guitar for your wants, needs and desires.

Keep the dust off it.

I've had two black Standards over the years - an '86 and a '93.

That black finish will drive you crazy with swirls - the more you wipe, the more it swirls....

Awesome guitar, and I agree that ebony looks very sleek. Like a jet black luxury car. And if you are going to buy a used model from a brick-and-mortar dealer, you will likely be dealing with a scratch or ding here or there, so having a good return policy to work with is nice (except when it takes 3 tries I guess). If it rocks, it rocks. Congratulations.
