A good rack mount guitar FX for live or/and studio

Hi everyone, I'm trying to get a good live sound and the overdrive/distortion I get from my Boss ME 50 aren't doing it for me. I also have a digitech RP 90 but that's even worse...

 

I'm thinking of getting a rack unit that I can run in the FX loop of the amp for reverbs, delay and chorus and use the amp's gain and master volume to get clean and dirty sounds... I'm looking for a more natural, less modeled sound.

 

Also, I'd like to stick a volume pedal between my guitar and the amp do they make a dedicated volume pedal?
