grischuk Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 I recently bought a new 2009 Les Paul Studio - it was a display model, but in perfect shape, and the setup seemed just fine. BUT, the bass strings (especially low E, and to an extent, A) are a little loud (for my taste) compared to the higher ones. It's most noticeable when playing full six-string chords or arpeggios, less so on single-note runs. I have changed the strings a few times (Ernie Ball 10's). Is there some kind of tweak that I can safely perform to adjust this? Maybe lower the bass side of the pickups or something? If so, how? There's a good local luthier who's worked on one of my acoustics, but I'd rather do it myself if possible (and, hey, times are tough/money is tight!). Thanks, all! Peace, love, and music! Dave
rockstar232007 Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 You just answered your own question. To lower the pickups, just turn the adjustment screw (the single screw next to the pickup) counter clockwise.
grischuk Posted April 26, 2010 Author Posted April 26, 2010 Thanx, rockstar! Dumb question #2: not that I would, but if I DID (turn it too much), could the screw come out of the thread, leaving me f****d?
KL Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 It won't be a problem if the screw comes out, BUT you are LOWERING the pickup not raising it so it will not come out when turning it in that direction.
Blackie Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Yes the screw could come out going counter clockwise lowering the pup. Just don't go more than a quarter inch below the ring.

And unless you lower the treble side as well, it would be hard to go low enough to cause the screw to come out. Even if it does, it's not that hard to get it back in, so you should be fine.
DiamondJig Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Adjust the screws in the pickup itself. +1 that's what they are there for, to balance the strings output.
