sixbladeknife Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I bought a 1991 Les Paul Studio the other day. When comparing the tuning heads with others online, they are different. Can anyone tell me about these? They're circular and say Gibson on them. Pics attached. Also. Looks like the fingerboard is ebony. I know you can't get the red wine finished with ebony anymore. Was it optional back then? Thanks!
NeoConMan Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I don't know for sure who made those tuners, but the Ebony board was common back then. Gibson has tuners made under license from any of several manufacturers. To know who does what can be tricky, but somebody here can probably help.
Wild_Rose Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 ok, saw them now! yes ebony fretboard was common on STudios till 98 I think. the tuners look like the ones they use for customs now. probably the previous owner replaced the stock ones! great guitar there!
sixbladeknife Posted April 29, 2010 Author Posted April 29, 2010 Thanks Wild_Rose! I'm not usually much of a Les Paul player, but for $600 I couldn't really say no! I'm gonna swap out the Seymour Duncan with the original bridge pickup. The Duncan is the pearly gates Billy Gibbons pickup, I'll probably throw that in something else.
smlveight Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Got my Studio brand new back in '90, and came with the same tuners......Most likely Gibson's way of dressing them up a bit.
sixbladeknife Posted April 29, 2010 Author Posted April 29, 2010 Thanks smlveight, good to know! Did you put that truss rod cover on there or is it original. Mine's blank, doesn't say studio. I've read that some say it and some don't.
BigKahune Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 ... {TPC} Mine's blank' date=' doesn't say studio. I've read that some say it and some don't.[/quote'] Yes. BTW, I really like the look of the Wine Red (?) with the black and ebony. Nice!
