lespaul24 Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 On my Les Paul studio, I know I want to use Seymour Duncan pickups...but I have come up with these combinations and can't choose which. :- (I play mostly rock but still want a classic electric blues sound) JB (neck)/JB (bridge) '59(neck)/JB (bridge) Alnico II (neck)/Alnico II (bridge) Thanks in advance!

lespaul24 Posted May 2, 2010 Author Posted May 2, 2010 a very crappy Crate 15W amp. (I borrowed a Fender tube amp for quite some time but I returned it)

lespaul24 Posted May 2, 2010 Author Posted May 2, 2010 yeah but still...pickups are what the sound comes out of the amp
pauline Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 yeah but still...pickups are what the sound comes out of the amp An average guitar/pup sounds much better through a good (tube-)amp than a good guitar/pup through a crappy SS amp' date=' IMO but that's just me[biggrin']
jameslucascalvert Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 You should seriously consider the Antiquity or Seth Lover Seymour Duncans. The only difference is the Antiquities are artificially aged. Very nice pups.
yoda Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 You maybe should put your money toward a better amp. The pickups in your guitar are good enough for now.

I absolutely hate crate amps. The worst sounding amp I've ever played was a crate. Get a good used tube amp instead.
CajunBlues Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 You maybe should put your money toward a better amp. The pickups in your guitar are good enough for now. No doubt... Your amplifier has more influence on tone than your guitar... If your studio came with the stock pickups, you likely have the 490r/498t... You are not going to do much better than that ....
jameslucascalvert Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Yes, you do need a better amp. But if you're like me, once you've set your mind on something, you've gotta do it. And yes, the pups in there are good ones already. If you like the tone you get with new pickups, get the new pickups. Borrow another amp.
Tim Plains Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 You're wasting your money if you go with pickups now.
Scott19 Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Defitenly get a new amp. I hate crate amps. They aren't really good. The pups are fine for now. Don't worry about them until you get a better amp.

zico10 Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Must agree new p/ups a waste of money - whatever they cost I guarantee you can pick up a small valve amp on Ebay- I reckon the little Epiphone junior 5watt would do or if you have a little more cash the Blackstar HT5 is fantastic-also 5 watts Next up perhaps an Orange Tiny Terror- more cash again though-15 watts I am lucky enough to have 6 Gibsons and I have Bareknuckle p/ups in some - Mules for a PAF sound a- Riff Raffs for rock and Santanas if I am feeling sophisticated - not often!- BUT - I have standard pickups in my SG , Firebird and 335 and they are just fine Go for an amp before the expense and hassle of swapping pickups . After all S/ Duncans are just factory pickups- if you do change go for boutique ones made the old way- although allegedly the new S/D Slash pickups are supposed to be custom made and will probably be priced accordingly! gizeh68 Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 If you have a real gibson les paul studio, then the stock pickups are fine. Get a real amp first and then decide if you don't like the stock pups. however, i have duncan '59's in my epi les paul studio and i love them. Great pickups, the best after market humbuckers i've ever installed. but i still like my burst bucker pro's better than my duncans. I don't think i'll ever change them.
deepblue Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 I have the JB bridge & '59 neck in my Charvel. Great combo if you do decide to get pups.
