TommyK Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 ...So freaking heavy? I acquired a Crate KBA-10 from my sister and it's like carrying around a tractor battery! All it has is a woofer and tweeter and associated knobs. What do they make the case out of? Lead?
djroge1 Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Most of the weight comes from the transformers and specifically the power transformer. Then 2nd heaviest piece is usually the woofer and/or the output trannie.
freak show Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 I always thought the heaviest part of an amp was the speaker magnet, but I could be wrong...
ShredAstaire Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 The amp makers don't want us all to look like Iggy Pop...they want to bulk us up a bit....
deepblue Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 My Orange head scales in at 53 Lbs, and the 4x12 cabinet is a back breaking 110 Lbs. Im glad it stays in one spot.

RichCI Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 My 100 Mesa head weighs at least as much as the 2x12 cabinet I plug it into. If it were a combo... fuggetaboutit.
djroge1 Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 I always thought the heaviest part of an amp was the speaker magnet' date=' but I could be wrong...[/quote'] Nope - the heaviest part is the power transformer. That's why an amp head is pretty heavy by its self. Unless perhaps you have an amp that has an old 15" blackwidow speaker.
TommyK Posted May 3, 2010 Author Posted May 3, 2010 I have no trouble lifting it, it's just it seems quite heavy for it's size.
