chptunes Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 Hey Les Paul guys.. I'm new.. just joined the forum because I wanted to study up for an SG purchase.. I played a SG Standard in a local shop and loved it... BUT, I have a new dilemma.. a surprising opportunity. A guy just posted a gently used Les Paul Studio on my local Craigslist page at a greeeaat price. It's a 2007 model.. Ebony with Chrome hardware, Original HSC, etc... Here's the questions... Is everyone happy with their LP Studio.. especially circa '07 models?.. are there any concerns for buying these guitars used?... -Corey
Jantha Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I have no experience with '07 models.. but I have owned studios before. They are GREAT guitars for a great price in my opinion. I would not hesitate to buy a studio IF it's a Les Paul you're after.
chptunes Posted May 5, 2010 Author Posted May 5, 2010 ..I know I've switched gears Jantha.. but this LP deal looks great. I've made contact and have an appointment to check it out.. I will audition it with my amp.
BigKahune Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 ... They are GREAT guitars for a great price in my opinion. I would not hesitate to buy a studio IF it's a Les Paul you're after. +1
chptunes Posted May 6, 2010 Author Posted May 6, 2010 ..thanks for your input, guys.. if the guitar is as nice as advertised, and it rocks with my amp, I'm not gonna pass it up. I'll shop for an SG later on... ..plan to audition with my amp on Saturday.. I'm bringing a few input tubes, because they make a huge difference with my Class A amp.. the 12AU7 Mullard is my current favorite [cause I like Power tube overdrive, with less Preamp overdrive].. then a GE 5751.. all NOS, of course. Any other neat ideas for conducting a successful audition are welcome. -Corey
gizeh68 Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 Just make sure you do a full-range test on the pots. Start with all pots at 0 and slowly bring each one up while strumming to make sure they aren't too dirty and/or not even connected. Check for string buzzing. Bring a capo and capo it @ the 6th or 8th fret and play some chords. If all the strings buzz then you'll have to check to make sure its a simple fix of adjusting the stop bar tailpiece as opposed to a warped neck. If the seller doesn't mind, bring small flat and phillips head screwdrivers and pop open the pups to check their underbellys to make sure they are actual gibby pups. Come to think of it, bring a peg winder to make loosening the strings easier. The more work you have to do to it in order to get it into playing condition reduces the cost to value ratio. If you have to sink another $100 to $200 into repairing it then you're probably better off buying a brand new one. Don't bring effects, just play it through the amp naturally to really listen to the pups. good luck!
chptunes Posted May 7, 2010 Author Posted May 7, 2010 ..great tips, gizeh68.. I'm bringing my whole tool-bag [haha]. I do plan to give it a thorough look.. in addition to checking pots, string buzz, and pups, I'm anxious to see how the guitar 'feels' in my hands.. I'm hoping it's nice and weighty. I don't have issues with heavy guitars.. the heavier, the better. Being a 2007 Studio, is the body 'chambered' for weight-relief or not? Thanks...
chptunes Posted May 7, 2010 Author Posted May 7, 2010 ..my decision just got a little more difficult.. just talked to the local shop manager.. he's dropped the price of the SG Standard to $1095!! ..I'm just gonna audition it and the LP Studio tomorrow.. see which one I can't live without. ..but ..a new SG Standard for $1095.. wow... Hopefully, I can post pics of a new Gibson on Monday.. we'll see what the weekend holds... [i've posted this Reply on my SG thread too] -Corey
sjtalon Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 Being a 2007 Studio' date=' is the body 'chambered' for weight-relief or not? [/quote'] Oh boy, don't ask. Play it, if you like it, who CARES !!
uyasgali Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I have a LP Studio 2007, ebony w/chrome hardware. I love it and I believe it is chambered but I don't really care. It sounds great to me!

G McBride Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I have the same guitar except mine is 2008. I love it. I think I paid around $1300 for mine new.
chptunes Posted May 10, 2010 Author Posted May 10, 2010 ..thanks for the feedback guys.. unfortunately, I didn't buy any guitars this weekend. I did audition the SG Standard and the used LP Studio with my amp.. I didn't like the SG as well during this audition.. and, although the used LP didn't "wow" me, I did like it better than the SG. Unexpectedly, the LP had been set-up with ultra heavy strings for drop-tunings.. the closest I could get it to Concert Pitch was a half-step down [and the strings were too tight].. this was probably the deal-breaker for me.. wish I could have heard it with stock gauge strings at Concert Pitch. ..the search continues... -Corey
G McBride Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Get out someplace and play one with a set of 10's on it and you will have a whole different impression of the guitar. I have the LP Studio and I also have a SG Standard. I think I would agree with you that I like the LP a little better for some reason. They are both fine guitars and worth play time. Good luck in your search. Problem is that the search will never end. Once you find the guitar of your dreams you will start wanting something just a little different. It is a lot of fun and keep you playing.
Cataplasm Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Good luck finding the guitar of your dreams, as all here know it is not as easy as it may sound, trial and error. I like my studio's, both quite heavy. BIG strings high action = fantastic tone If it didn't "WOW" you then you probably should keep up the search.
