I dunno...

I've heard a few really musical pieces from recent bunches but...

I was messin' last night with some 60s lyric sites. What struck me is that the ones with tunes I remember - if only in fragments - were very musical in the sense of having tunes folks could sing along with...

For what it's worth, I think today's musicians have two things working against them to be known and remembered as some of those 60s things - and even later 30s and early 40s stuff.

First is that there's not the more or less single pipeline getting music to consumers if one were to go beyond the local radio station and regional dance gigs. Too many options and folks tend to get into their little groups on music and never even hear other stuff. A juke box with this month's hits? Yeah, right.

Second is that I think we're in kinda a period not unlike the transformation of swing to bebop in which people no longer could whistle along. There were a number of commercial factors involved, too... But the bottom line is that people tended more to pieces to sing along with and tap their foot to. We can tap our foot, but how many of us really sing stuff we heard the past week on the radio or jukebox as we did 40-50 years ago?

Seriously, I don't think I'm saying this as a grouchy old man as much as someone reflecting on cycles of music and some major changes in the music biz.

As usual, I agree milod.

And I would add, there is a real lack of class, and taste. Being angry is one thing, but the shock factor has gone to just STUPID.

Sad.

To be honest I rarely listen to local radio stations anymore, in the car I plug in the iPod and put it on random. When I'm home I listen to a Canadian rock station. One so called rock station, one "classic rock" station and 8 different country stations with a couple pop ones in my area. My choices are rather limited locally. Crossing my fingers for some good stuff this decade.
