DaveS Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Hello I'm sure this has been asked before but..... I currently have 10's on my LP but am considering changing to 9's. I have stuck with the 10's cos that is what the guitar was fitted with when I bought it. Would I need to change the neck relief if I did this, or is it just the action an maybe the intonation? I've heard that such a small change would not really make much difference to the set up.
BigKahune Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Adjustments - probably not. Check the relief before you make the change. Then make the change, let it settle in for a while and then check the relief. If it's moved to far for you, give the truss a tweak (1/4 turn), let is settle and check it again.
Cataplasm Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Hi DaveS Probably will not even need a neck adjustment, if the action is good now it should be good with the new strings. The intonation might need a slight adjustment, however you might find most saddles don't need to be moved. Follow BigKahune's advice, SMALL adjustments, Tune up, let settle Good Luck
Sefrez Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 The intonation WILL be different as the strings are of different diameter. But the change may be so slight that you don't notice. Either way, intonating is easy. I'm sure you could do it.
Blackie Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I jump around with gauge and have not bother to fine tune any intonation and have been tuning fine from 9's to 10's to 11's so far. ........and intonation is easy ......just move the saddle with a little screw driver forward or back to dial it in.
Eracer_Team Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Watch out of the nut slots. if you go down in gauge the string might sit lower since the nut is cut for 10's and you might get string buzz. also if you go up the strings might sit high at the nut.
zico10 Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 A different view - why go to 9's ?- rubber bands - A pro suggested I go to 11's but wrap the strings through and over the tail piece works for me- better sound - more string mass and the tension is relieved by string over the top of the tailpiece intonation only needed tweaking very slightly ZICO .
dleth Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I found going from 10's to nines on my Robot LP made it very difficult to keep in tune. I think it came down to the nut. Switched back to 10's and all is cool. No problem swinging back and forth on my old MIJ LP copy though.
