Thanks..

They did a really nice job on this. Great price too.

The only thing that looks "worn" is a little wear at the edge of the maple cap.. show's up as greenish white.

Sometimes the pic's don't show for me when I open this thread up. I assume the pic's are showing for everybody else?

Are you at work or home?

I have the same prob on my work computer, because the firewall blocks photobucket and flikr.

and are p-90s rated?

I'm not sure what you mean by rated.. Is it that not all Gibson p90's are created equal? Do some have more windings than others and is the rating the resistance value of the windings?

Anyway, please let me know and I'll see what I can find out.

Thanks

If anyone else is interested here is another lp studio with p-90's

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290431222086&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Not as nice or rare as the goldtop...

I have one of these also but in dark brown. It was my main guitar for the band until I found the gold top. I love the sound of the p90's.

Oddly though, the tone pot capacitors in the older dark brown are much smaller in size than the cap's in the gold top. I don't know the capacitance value's but the small one are little brown wafer looking caps and the bigger ones in the gold top are the orange/red can type...as shown in the pics.

The gold top does sound a little different than the dark brown but not drastically. That's only at low volume. The gold top will get it's first loud playing at thurs band practice. It will be interesting to see if there is much if any difference in sound. I expect the treble roll off to be a little different.

Thanks

i have seen one for £800, is it worth £800? as i was going to get the normal studio, for £1000 but which one to buy

i mean are do the sound like a mega cool pick up' date=' are they better than most pick ups.[/quote']

Oh I get it now.... must be that language barrier [cool]

P90's in general are supposed to be very high output compared to other single coil pickups. And they do scream.

I love the punchy sound and I'm willing to put up with the noise... Oh yeah, because the are single coil and not dual coil (humbuckers) they will... well....hum. They are no worse than conventional single coil pickups on a fender strat or tele.

They do sound mega cool but you may want to try them first if you can.

Hope that helps

I guess that's a matter of opinion and taste. I personally would still take my gold top over the normal studio. I just have a thing for gold top LP's but the prices have been way out of sight for me.. Once I saw this studio gold top for $800.00 I had to have it. The purists will say it's not the same sound as the expensive real Les Paul gold top and that may be true but it's going to be close enough for me. You can see by the pic's it's not very "worn" so it looks very much like the expensive gold top until you look close and the main thing would be noticed is no binding. I'm talking about all gold top's with p90's....

Hope that helps too. Good luck

what kind of music is it best for would you say

I don't think it has any boundries but I play a Studio P90 in the band I'm in and we do Blues and Blues Rock and it's great for that. I think the p90's cut through the mix a little better than my LP with humbuckers.

apparently there's only 120 of this model being made

Cool for me if that's true but it doesn't seem likely at $800.00 per guitar. Gibson is in business to make money and if there were only 120 made it doesn't seem worth it. I would think they would charge more if only 120 were made. But who know's maybe there's a good business case for it... generate a little excitement. That would make mine pretty rare and valuable.

The number I heard was 1000 made... but that was 3rd, 4th, 5th, 20th, hand info. Only Gibson knows for sure.

From the pic, the orange drops are .022uf +/-5% (223J is 22x1000 picofarads with 5% error) 600V rating - which is typically what controls the size. (obviously overkill for a guitar, but doesn't matter)

Usually humbuckers get .047uF, but other then the code on them, you would not notice a difference in size of the same types.

I think it is very cool they are using the Drops, and the older wiring scheme - nice touches for sure!
