Looking for advice about buying this used SG Special

Hi all,

I'm looking for advice on whether this is a deal worth pursuing. It is for my 12-year old son that has made such good progress, his instructor says he plays on the level of his 15 to 16-year-olds. His instructor has an SG that my son really likes. I want to get him a better guitar (he has a Melody Maker now), but don't want to spring for the full price of a new SG. I found this on in a local ad (I would upload a graphic, but can't seem to figure out how to do it.):

2005 SG Special with Heritage Cherry high gloss finish

Vox Valvetronix AD15VT 15W Guitar Combo Amp

monster cord

He is asking $550 for the package.

So, I have two primary questions. First, is there enough difference in the SG Standard and SG Special to be concerned about, and second, is this a pretty good deal?

From my research, it seems like the only difference is that the SG Special has dot enlays and the SG Standard has the trapezoid inlays and the pickups seem to be different.

Any guidance you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a deal to me.

Even if you replaced the pickups with Burstbuckers from the Standard, you'd still be a head money wise. Everything else is as you say, for the most part cosmetic.

Maybe the teacher can be of some help on this one, like check it out with you before you buy in case there are obvious things wrong with it that you may not be aware of or notice. Or maybe give you a list of things to look for.

Good luck.

yep! sounds like a good deal. To upload photos, you have to create an account on a website, for example, photo bucket and upload your photos to that, next you will have to drag your cursor over the picture you want to post and copy the IMG address and go back to here and click on 'post reply' next, you paste it!

I agree, that is a good deal. The differences between the SG Special and the Standard are mostly extra niceties like block inlays, bound fretboard, and a thicker finish. I play a Special and do not miss them at all. Specials are still really nice guitars and $550 for a used one and a good practice amp ain't bad.

It's great that you're encouraging your children into music and supporting it. Obviously check out before you buy like it's been said. The special should be fine for someone his age, and when he grows up he can decide if he wants to save up and go for the Standard himself, or some other high end guitar. Hope he sticks with it, kids attentions can vary, he may even wind up acoustic you never know.

Best of luck

You need to right click on the images and choose "properties" then copy the location of the photo.

Click on the little icon on the tools that has a little mountain and sun in it, and paste the copied text between the header that comes up.

You can click "preview" before you post to see if it worked

Decent equipment for the price. Good deal.

BTW, you took the wrong link. Right click the pic in your album and copy the "direct link" in between the IMG flags here.
