heymisterk Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Exile by The Rolling Stones is about to be re-released. What are your thoughts on this album? Most rock critics agree it's one of the best rock albums of all time. As a huge Stones fan, I do really enjoy the intensity and relentlessness of the album, as well as some absolute masterpiece songs. But it's not my fave Stones album; actually like Beggars Banquet and Sticky Fingers more...
SGSpecialguy Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 I really like Exile, its such a diverse record, I gotta be in the mood for it though, but I think it has some of their best material on it, not necessarily radio material, I tend to like some of the more raw stuff on that record, I think that whole era was some of their best work, exile/sticky
Rocky4 Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Yeah, Sticky Fingers is my favorite Stones album. They were so much better when Mick Taylor was with them, although I did like Let It Bleed.
HeadCase Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 "The Greatest Rock & Roll Band In The World!" Exile is my favorite...
deepblue Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 The only Stones I can listen to is with Mick Taylor on guitar......great stuff.
Big Bill Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 ^ I prefer The Stones prior to Woody coming on board.
sgman Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Exile On Main Street is a good album, but personally I like Sticky Fingers much better.
EVOL! Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Not a fan of the album. I think Jagger is one of the weakest singers to make it to that level of stardom. My favorite Stones is Their Satanic Majesties Request. Long live Brain Jones. He gave the Stones that extra sonic flavor that saved them from being just another British guitar band. Keith and Mick didn't get it and looking at the sleep aids they have put out in the last 20 years, they never will appreciate what he did for the band.
Thin_Lizzy Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 A few hit and miss songs on Exile. Though I've always liked All Down The Line and Rocks Off. Stick Fingers for me. Also this is a great one from Let it Bleed:
craigh Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 I like Exile alot but my favorite Stones albums are in no particular order: Beggers Banquet Between The Buttons Out Of Our Heads (US LP London label) Satanic Majesties Ya Ya's Gimmie Shelter Craig
DeVeeWee Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 I always felt that Exile was more like a 'live' jam session bluesy album, a bit an outlayer for the normal Stones stuff, and that's why I like it so much(although the arrangements are quite solid!). Side 1 of the album with 'Rocks off', 'Rip this joint', 'Shake your hips' is just...awesome!
SGSpecialguy Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Ive pulled out the Stcky Fingers AND Exile today, had them on all day,, man !! Sticky has some GREAT stuff on there !!!! Excellent stuff actuallly !! So does Exile though,,
FirstMeasure Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Exile and Sticky Fingers are Great Albums, but I have to go with the Brian Jones era stuff for my favorite. I liked his experimental approach. Aftermath and Their Satanic Majesties Request are my two favorite albums.
Blackie Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 ..........hmmmmmmm I have a bunch of Stones vinyl on the shelf and have shunned it for years.........I saw them in like 1980 and thet wer horrible. ......might have to cue them up again..........or not.........
Flip Side Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 I've got to say, I think it is there best album. That said, I listened to Sticky Fingers and Between The Buttons much of last week on vinyl and can say, those are two fabulous albums as well! What's the reissue? Digitally remastered I assume?
SGSpecialguy Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 digitally remastered with "a batch of previously unreleased studio outakes"and video too supposedly
Mr. Robot Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 I am a huge Stones fan. Nothing beats them. But I never quite understood why exile is often listed as the best. It is a great album with some classic tracks - but there are also a few fillers in there aswell. Keith was at his best on this album - I love his rough backing vocals on some of the blues numbers. But I think I have to agree with the others - it is Sticky Fingers for me.
heymisterk Posted May 15, 2010 Author Posted May 15, 2010 So many guitarists - Izzy Stradlin', Rich Robinson, - cite Exile as a huge influence. I guess I never think of Keith Richards as a riff-monger in the way I think of Jimmy Page or some others. But when you think of his riffs: Gimme Shelter, Satisfaction, Brown Sugar - he was right up there with him. Pete Townsend even got his "windmill" idea from Richards. Mick inspires many love/hate debates; I love him. I love his voice - which has changed very little over the years - and his lyrics. Moonlight Mile...One of my favorite tracks...
SGSpecialguy Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 here are a few studios out takes with some interesting Photos of the boys from that era,, I believe these will be on th re-released CD looks like pretty much the same video but its a tune that will be released on the Exile cd
Californiaman Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 Sure that's a great album, but I find myself listening to "Some Girls" quite a bit. I love that album for it's many genres covered. There's disco, country western, rock, R&B and soul. You can't go wrong with an album like that.
Rocky4 Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 How many of us banged our heads up against a wall trying to figure out Stones tunes until we found out Keif tunes to an open G? An instantly identifiable sound.
heymisterk Posted May 15, 2010 Author Posted May 15, 2010 How many of us banged our heads up against a wall trying to figure out Stones tunes until we found out Keif tunes to an open G? An instantly identifiable sound. Lol! So true! I remember I had learned nearly ALL of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" in standard tuning by ear. I thought I was hot sh*t, but still, it didn't sound quite right. This was before tabs were as easily found as they are now. When they became as simple as a Google search and I looked at the tunings, my emotions were somewhere between intense frustration and immense satisfaction when I saw the right way to play it.
